Clippers top Tides 5-3
Espino strong as Clippers hold off ninth inning rally for victory
Columbus- The Clippers came out on top of the Norfolk Tides Tuesday night, winning 5-3. An early Columbus lead held up through the game, even after a ninth inning rally by the Tides.
Columbus starter Paolo Espino held the Norfolk offense to three hits in the first four innings to keep them off the board.
The Clippers offense was able to make the first move late in the fourth. Center fielder Ezequiel Carrera led off the inning with a bunt single to third. Ryan Rohlinger followed with his first hit of the game a fly ball to center field, pushing Carrera to third. Jeremy Hermidacame in strong for the Clippers homering to center field to clear the bases and put the Clippers up 3-0.
Espino began to waiver in the fifth inning, giving up three singles allowing the Tides to gain a run. Espino finished the inning before being replaced by Matt Langwell in the sixth.
Langwell kept the Tides quiet through the seventh and managed to not give up a single hit to Norfolk. Langwell received his sixth hold of the season against the Tides.
Late in the seventh, the Clippers had another productive inning. Juan Diaz started the inning off with a single on a ground ball to center field, followed by a single by right fielder Matt Carson. With two outs Roberto Perez brought both runners in on a hard hit to the right field corner. The Clippers ended the inning with a comfortable four run lead.
Lefty Nick Hagadone was called from the bullpen after an uneventful eighth inning to close for the Clippers. With two outs, Hagadone gave up a double to Norfolk’s Zealous Wheeler. Following Wheeler Alex Liddi got a hold of Hagadone hitting a bomb to left field, scoring two runs.
Hagadone gave up one more single before receiving his third out to end the game.
Columbus’ win Tuesday night tied the series with the Norfolk Tides 2-2. The Clippers will begin a four-game home series with the Gwinnett Braves Wednesday afternoon.
