Colon, Akron RubberDucks blank Reading Fightin Phils, 9-0

(Akron, Ohio) May 26, 2014 – Akron starter Joseph Colon (4-2)pitched a shutout complete game against the Reading Fightin Phils in Monday afternoon’s 9-0 victory at Canal Park.

Colon earned the win in his longest outing for the Ducks, allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out four batters. Colon retired six consecutive batters between the second and third innings. This was the first complete game by a pitcher since Giovanni Soto’s no-hitter 2-1 victory on July 15, 2012.

The last nine-inning shutout for Akron was thrown in 2012 by Steven Wright on May 6, at Bowie. With the win, the RubberDucks avoided a Reading sweep, and broke a four-game losing streak.

The RubberDucks hit a streak in the second inning, batting through the lineup to score five runs and take an early 6-0 lead over the Fightins. Their momentum continued into the third inning, with Akron putting three more runs on the board.

Prior to this game, Akron had scored a combined three runs in the first three games of the series.

Joe Wendle matched his season-best with four RBI, batting back-to-back two-RBI doubles in the second and third innings. Overall on the series, Wendle produced six RBI.

Bryan LaHair chalked up two RBI on the day during his four at-bats. Tyler NaquinFrancisco Lindor and Jordan Smith each added an RBI.

Reading starter Mike Nesseth (1-4) was charged with the loss, pitching one and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits, six earned runs, and walking two batters.

The Akron RubberDucks will head to Bowie, MD on Tuesday to begin a three-game series against the Boysox at Prince George’s Stadium. Will Roberts (4-5, 4.21) will start for the Ducks, and Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2 5.57) will take the mound for Bowie.
