SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Recent roster moves put the Columbus Clippers in a bind Monday night as they were forced to send lefty relieverScott Barnes to the mound to make the start.

Columbus was shut out by the Syracuse Chiefs, losing 5-0.

Barnes got into immediate trouble, he walked the leadoff hitter, followed by a sac bunt to put the runner on second. Barnes gave up a line drive over center fielder Matt Carson's head and the ensuing double brought in Syracuse's first run of the night.

The Chiefs’ runner on second stole third, before being driven in by a high fly ball out to centerfield. Barnes and the Clippers left the inning with a two run deficit.

After a clear second inning Syracuse came back for more in the third. After walking the leadoff batter, a ground out put the runner on second with one out. Barnes was pulled after the out for Blake Wood. Wood allowed the runner to score on his own throwing error before ending the inning with a double play.

The run was earned by Barnes who ultimately earned the loss for the night too – his second of the season.

C.C. Lee entered the game in the fifth. Lee ran into no problems until the sixth when he left one hanging and Syracuse’s Brandon Laird went yard to put the Clippers down four runs.

Frank Herrmann came in and pitched clear through the seventh before giving up back-to-back doubles in the eighth to put Syracuse up, 5-0.

Southpaw Mike Zagurski finished the inning, but with no offensive support the Clippers’ bullpen's attempts were wasted.

The Clippers have just a single game left in their four game series with Syracuse. After an off day Wednesday they are set to return to Huntington Park to play the Durham Bulls.
