Columbus Clippers lose to Durham Bulls, 5-2, after early lead
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus Clippers dropped their third game in a row to Durham Saturday night, as they lost 5-2.
Down by one in the bottom of the fourth and Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, who is currently rehabbing in Columbus, stepped up to the plate. With Elliot Johnson on first Kipnis smacked a two-run homer out to the left-field bleachers to take the lead.
Recent roster addition Gabriel Arias took the mound for the Clippers. Arias went 6.2 innings, letting up four runs on five hits and earning his first loss in Columbus.
The Bulls struck first in the second inning, Arias gave up a double to the lead off hitter. A ground out advanced the runner to third and he would score on a pop fly to center field. Durham led the Clippers, 1-0.
Top of the fifth and Durham had an answer to Kipnis' two-run dinger that gave Columbus a one-run lead. With one out Arias gave up a grounder down the first base line for a triple, a sac fly deep in left field drove in the tying run for the Bulls.
The Bulls kept rolling though the sixth. Arias gave up a walk to put a runner on. After two outs Arias let one up andVince Belnome crushed it to right field for two. Durham's lead on the Clippers jumped to 4-2.
Scott Barnes was called in for relief late in the seventh and continued pitching into the eighth. The Bulls' lead off hitterJayson Nix went yard to left field for Durham's second home run of the night.
Vinnie Pestano put in an inning of work in the ninth and kept the Bulls off the board, but with no supporting offense the Clippers fell to the, 5-2.
The loss extended Columbus' losing streak to five games with a single game left in its four-game series with Durham, before Charlotte comes to town. Saturday's result also lost the Clippers the No. 2 spot in the International League West standings, Louisville took over and now sits just behind first place Indianapolis.
