Cooper shines, but Mudcats split twinbill

Woodbridge, Va. – The Carolina Mudcats and Potomac Nationals split a twin bill on Tuesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Mudcats blanked the P-Nats 4-0 before the Nationals returned the favor in a 3-0 win.

The Mudcats are 28-30 in the second half, 60-68 overall. Potomac’s record stands at 25-32, and 56-71 overall, after the night’s action.

Jordan Cooper (7-7) was nearly flawless in game one. The right-hander held the P-Nats to five hits over five innings with three strikeouts. J.D Reichenbach finished up the game with two spotless frames.

Carolina scored early in the game against Potomac’s starter Robbie Ray (4-11). Tony Wolters led off the game with his Carolina League-leading eighth triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Giovanny Urshela for a 1-0 lead.

The Mudcats struck twice in the second inning. Ronny Rodriguez singled, and scored on a double by Todd Hankins. After reaching on a walk, Tyler Cannon came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Rodriguez launched a majestic blast into the forest beyond left field to lead off the fourth, rounding out the scoring.

Matt Grace (8-12) stole the show in game two, as the southpaw hurled a complete game shutout. He scattered four hits, and struck out seven.

The only runs came in the second inning on a three-run homer by Stephen King off of starter Francisco Jimenez (8-8). Jimenez was pulled from the game after walking two batters with two out in the second.

Rob Nixon extended his scoreless innings streak to 13 by tossing 3.1 on two hits.

The Carolina Mudcats continue their series at Potomac on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
