Cooper's gem leads Mudcats over the Keys

FREDERICK, MD – Jordan Cooper tossed his best outing of the season as the Carolina Mudcats dominated the Frederick Keys 10-2 at Harry Grove Stadium on Friday night. The win is Carolina’s fourth in five games, and improves their record to 10-11. The Keys fall to an equal record, and under .500 for the first time this season.  

Cooper (1-2) scored his first win by blanking Frederick over eight innings. The right-hander scattered three hits, walked one, and struck out eight in the stellar outing.

With Cooper in control on the mound, the Mudcats went after Keys’ starterEduardo Rodriguez (1-2). The Indians’ Advanced-A affiliate brushed up the lefty for seven runs, five earned, on six hits over four innings. Rodriguez struggled with his command, walking five.

The Mudcats opened the scoring with three runs in the second. Jake Lowery started the inning with a walk, and moved to third on a doubleBryson MylesJustin Toole sent a grounder to short, but Sammie Starr’s throw sailed into the first base dugout. Lowery and Myles scored on the play for a 2-0 lead. Tyler Naquin doubled home Toole later in the frame to cap the scoring, and bolstered Carolina to a 3-0 advantage.

The squad poured on more steam as Charlie Valerio singled home Jordan Smith for a 4-0 lead in the third. Carolina broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning. Lowery doubled in two runs to chase Rodriguez from the game with no outs. Reliever Trent Howard took over, and surrendered a sac-fly to Myles for a 7-0 advantage. Valerio later scored in the inning on a Medina groundball to short for an 8-0 lead.

Carolina scored twice in the seventh on a Medina single and a wild pitch. Frederick scored twice in the ninth against reliever Enosil Tejeda for the final margin.

The Mudcats continue their weekend set with Frederick at Harry Grove Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The matinee gets underway at 2 p.m.
