Cougars blank Captains 6-0, take commanding 2-0 series lead
(Geneva, IL) – RHP Duane Underwood got the start for the Cougars and earned the win and Kane County shutout the Captains 6-0. Underwood pitched six scoreless innings, and walked five while striking out eight. Tyler Ihrig pitched three innings to earn the save, and to finish off the shutout for the Cougars. Kane County takes a two games to nothing lead in the best of five Midwest League Championship Series.
Kane County scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to open the scoring. The Cougars batted around and had four hits as well as two walks in the inning. The Cougars used an RBI single from Yasiel Balaguert, a wild pitch and bases loaded walk and the Cougars led the Captains 3-0.
Kane County scored an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single from Jacob Rogers. The score was 4-0 Cougars. Kane County added on in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one runner on, Mark Zagunisdoubled and the runner scored on an error, the fourth of the night for the Captains and the score was 5-0 Kane County. The Cougars extended the lead to 6-0 on a sacrifice fly by Shawon Dunston.
RHP Jordan Milbrath started the game for the Captains and took the loss. Milbrath lasted just two and two thirds innings and allowed six hits, three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Luis Dejesus pitched two and one third inning and allowed one hit, one unearned run, a walk and he had two strikeouts. Carlos Melo pitched two innings and allowed two hits, one earned run, and he fanned one. Justin Brantley pitched two thirds of an inning and allowed one earned run while striking out one. Alexis Paredes pitched one third of an inning to finish the night for the Captains.
The Captains will return home to Eastlake, Ohio for game three of series on Saturday night with the game starting at 7:00 PM. Games Four and Five, if necessary, will take place on Sunday, September, 14 and Monday, September, 15 at 7 PM.
