WINSTON-SALEM, N.C - The Carolina Mudcats fell 8-3 in the series opener with the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark Friday night.

Right-handed pitcher Nick Pasquale started the game for the Mudcats, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Lefty Francisco Jimenez took the loss for the Mudcats pitching 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits.

The Dash started right-handed pitcher Myles Jaye. Jaye earned the win for the Dash, maintaining only three runs on eight hits over seven innings. Reliever Cody Winiarski earned the save for the Dash, pitching the final two innings. 

After two scoreless innings, both teams hit the scoreboard in the third inning.

The Mudcats managed two runs in the top of the third starting off a ground ball single to left field from centerfielder Tyler Naquin. Shortstop Francisco Lindor followed with his 14th double of the year to left field and scored Naquin. Second baseman Joe Wendle singled on a line drive to centerfield that pushed Lindor to third and then scored on first baseman Jerrud Sabourin’s sacrifice fly out.

The Dash reacted to the Mudcat’s inning by matching their score plus one. Designated hitter Mark Tracy got on base with double and after a walk both runners scored on a line drive single to left field by shortstop Chris Curley.  The Dash’s third run of the inning scored off of a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Dash up 3-2 after three innings.

The Mudcat’s came back in the fourth inning to match the score. Left fielder Bo Greenwell doubled and designated hitter Charlie Valerio reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. With Greenwell and Valerio at the corners, third baseman Justin Toole hit an RBI single to tie the game 3-3.

The score stayed at a tie until the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Dash broke away from the tie thanks to a Curley two RBI double on a line drive to left field.

The Dash continued to add to their lead in the eighth inning.  Right fielder Mark Haddow doubled on a line drive and scored off of a throwing error by Lindor. First baseman Rangel Ravelo reached on a fielding error by Lindor and scored off of an RBI single by De Pinto. Second baseman Joey DeMichele finished the inning with a RBI single that brought the score 8-3.

The Mudcats went three up, three down in the top of the ninth, ending the game with a win for the Dash 8-3.

The Mudcats and the Dash continue with their second game of the three game series Saturday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
