Dayton earns walk-off win over Lake County

DAYTON, OH- The Dayton Dragons (1-2, 29-43) tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and won it in the bottom of the tenth inning to defeat the Lake County Captains (2-1, 25-45) 6-5 to avoid the three-game sweep on Saturday night.

Dayton scored two runs in the third inning to take an early lead off Captains’ starter Robbie Aviles. Left fielder Daniel Pigott tripled and crossed the plate on a RBI double by second basemanSammy Diaz. Designated hitter Junior Arias singled home Diaz for a 2-0 lead.

The Dragons made it a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Third basemanTanner Rahier led off with a single and came around to score when shortstop Zach Vincej tripled into the left-center field gap. CatcherEric Haase allowed his fifth passed ball, bringing Vincej home.

Aviles exited the game after four innings. He got a no-decision after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits along with one walk and two strikeouts. Luis Morel entered the game in relief.

Lake County got on the board in the sixth inning. Third baseman Erik Gonzalez singled and shortstop Dorssys Paulino reached on a failed force attempt and throwing error. When centerfielder Logan Vick walked, the ball got passed catcher Brandon Dailey, Gonzalez scored while Paulino moved to third. First baseman Joe Sever plated Paulino with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Captains cut the lead to two.

Dayton starter Sal Romano threw six innings for a no-decision as well. He gave up two runs (both unearned) on two hits and three walks. He fanned seven batters. Mike Saunders took the mound for the seventh.

Saunders allowed two walks and threw two wild pitches in the eighth before departing with two on and two out.Sean Lucas entered the jam for Dayton.

Right fielder Anthony Santander greeted Lucas with a three-run home run to left field, his fourth of the year and second in as many games. Lake County took a 5-4 lead to the bottom of the eighth.

Saunders was charged with two runs in one and one-third innings.

Morel and Cody Penny each threw two scoreless innings of relief. Louis Head entered to try to lockdown the save in the ninth.

Brent Peterson led off with Dayton’s third triple of the night. Vincej tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Dragons won the game on a bases-loaded, one out infield single by Rahier.

Head took the loss, allowing two runs in one and one-third innings while Lucas won the game with two and one-third innings of one-run ball.

After two games of more than 10 hits, Lake County only managed three in the game. Gonzalez, Santander and Haase all accounted for the hits.

Lake County will travel to Bowing Green, Kentucky to open a three-game series on Sunday night. Lake County will start RHP Jake Sisco (3-5, 3.25 ERA) and he will be opposed by RHP Reinaldo Lopez (2-3, 3.33 ERA) for the Hot Rods. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
