Despite Gallas homers, Erie sweeps doubleheader
Erie won game one 5-2 and game two 4-2 on Saturday.
AKRON, OH – Despite two home runs by Anthony Gallas, the Erie SeaWolves (47-53) swept the AkronRubberDucks (57-44) in Saturday’s doubleheader at Canal Park on Saturday.
In game two, a three-run third inning by Erie gave the SeaWolves an early advantage over the ‘Ducks. A single by Jason Krizan sent Dixon Machado home. A double by Marcus Lemon would follow, driving Jason Krizan across the plate. Lemon scored on a wild pitch, extending the Erie lead to 4-0 in the top of the third.
A solo home run by Gallas brought the score to 4-2 in the fourth. The homer was the second for Gallas in the doubleheader, following a two-run crack in the sixth inning of the first game. The Cleveland-native has parked three home runs in the series against Erie, and nine on the season.
The loss was charged to Jordan Cooper (6-2). In his five innings on the bump for Akron, Cooper allowed seven hits, four earned runs, one homer and struck out two batters.
Wilsen Palacios (6-4) picked up the win for Erie also throwing five innings. He allowed six hits, two earned runs, one home run, struck out four batters and walked one.
The SeaWolves took the first game of the evening 5-2 with a breakout fourth inning. A RBI double by Lemon sent Ramon Cabrera across the plate. A single off the bat of Machado followed, driving in Aaron Westlake and Lemon to bring the score to 5-0.
Erie starter Josh Turley picked up a win in his double-A debut, hurling six innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, one homer, walking two batters and striking out four. Reliever Jose Valdez recorded his 13th save in the outing, his fourth against the ‘Ducks. In his inning on the mound, Valdez allowed one hit and struck out two batters.
Cody Anderson (4-9) was charged with his ninth loss of the season following a five-inning outing. The righty allowed ninehits, five earned runs and walked one batter.
The Akron RubberDucks will close out the five-game series against the Erie SeaWolves Sunday at 2:05 PM at CanalPark. Righty Duke von Schamann (3-5) will start for Akron, and right-hander Warwick Saupold (5-8) will take the mound for Erie. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
