Cleveland traded outfielder Drew Stubbs to the Colorado Rockies Wednesday in exchange for left-hander reliever Josh Outman. The trade was first reported by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal and Cleveland's return was first reported by the Denver Post's Troy Renck.

Stubbs, 29, posted a .233/.305/.360 line with 0.8 fWAR in 146 games in 2013 after being acquired as a part of the Shin-Soo Choo trade last offseason. The signing of David Murphy to a two-year, $12 million contract earlier in the offseason crowded Cleveland's outfield and had led to speculation that Stubbs would be dealt.

Stubbs is set to earn approximately $3.8 million in his second time through arbitration, per MLB Trade Rumors.

Outman, 29, posted a 4.33 ERA, a 3.25 FIP, a 3.62 xFIP, and 0.7 fWAR in 54.0 innings in 2013. The left-hander was even better facing lefties, as he posted a 2.21 FIP, a 2.76 xFIP, and a 39:11 SO:BB in 31.0 innings against them.

Outman is projected to earn approximately $1.4 million in his second time through arbitration, per MLB Trade Rumors.

No, Ubaldo can not still accept the Qualifying Offer the Tribe made, nor can any player that declined it.

At the end of the day it's about $2.5 mill saved and another bullpen arm. They can use that money elsewhere and maybe can find a way to get Ubaldo back. He can still actually accept the QO though, yes?

I'd let Outman go ahead and try the extreme overhand delivery if he wants to give it a go. I like unconventional thinking, sometimes it can lead to breakthroughs when looking at a guy with a long term mediocre career. Seems like a guy Mike Marshall would like.

I wasn't excited about this trade until I saw Kyle Boddy's article on Outman from earlier this year about his original pitching motion. Given the freedom granted to Bauer I can only hope the Indians will let Outman make a few adjustments on his own.

I can feel the breeze from Denver. Save a few bucks here and a few bucks there....

I am a daily reader of this site and have never before posted. I read it because it is always full of intelligent and insightful news and views about the Tribe. If I wanted comments like some of those posted in this article, I would just read the comments on Tony, you and the other writers are excellent and professional and thank you for keeping it that way.

Right on Tony. There's no reason to have that stuff. It is nice that more people seem to be commenting guys are doing a great job. Thanks!

Thats an EXTREMELY valid point that has not crossed my mind. The only rumors we have heard about Bourn being traded have come from here because we all know how logical and beneficial it would be to rid ourselves of our contract, but the major media outlets have no once mentioned Bourn's name in rumors. The FO has probably taken what you mentioned into consideration, and even if they were considering trading him, it was wise not letting any of the rumors slip out.
December 18, 2013 - 8:10 PM EST
If we were able to trade Bourn after signing him as FA. My question is what kind of perception would that give future FA to come to Cleveland if you are going to trade them a year later. Just throwing that out there even it makes sense to move Bourn to create financial flexibility.
December 18, 2013 - 8:01 PM EST
Good move, but I still hope we trade Bourn. We can move Brantley to center and not miss much defensively IMO, especially when you consider that Brantley's got a good arm and Bourn throws like a girl. We could also move Murphy/Raburn to left field, Swisher to right and use Aviles as a 5th outfielder. Murphy could probably handle backup CF duties. Santana would handle most of the first base playing time.

Bourn is going to make either $41 million over the next 3 years or $53 million over the next 4 years. I would MUCH MUCH MUCH rather resign Ubaldo or Masterson than keep Bourn.

Just a quick note.....I have no problem with people being sarcastic or pissed off or having an axe to grind....but I'm not a fan of some language with the way it is used or the phrasing of some terms. I'm pretty lenient on this stuff, but I have received some emails on some of the comments. Please try and keep it clean....stuff like CA is Geigh and Jizzin in the USA is not needed. In the future I will just delete those posts solely because of the heading. Thanks everyone.

You're right Tondo, he's not been good at all against RH'ers, so profiles now as a LOOGY. I should have looked at more stats before I said that.

My statement was really just coming from the perspective that his history as a player is not strictly that of a LOOGY, i.e he was a starter in the minors and when he came up with Oakland.

Still, like the deal, as Stubbs doesn't have a place in this outfield. I do hope that this finally puts talk about Bourn being dealt to rest. 8--)

Drew Stubbs sucks. I think the Indians got a real diamond in the rough here. I saw Josh Outman pitch before and he was lights out. No question that he'll dominate out of the Indians pen. He is Paul Assenmacher like times 10. I wouldn't be surprised if he leads MLB in saves. Rolaids Reliever of the Year = Josh Outman.
December 18, 2013 - 6:27 PM EST
I don't understand why people feel that the Indians lost a lot of talent. this off season. At this time last year many wanted Jimenez DFA and he was a bust. Others stated why did CA signed a player who basically was out baseball to a minor league contract. (Kazmir) Well 92 wins later we find out the FO and Francona knew what they were doing.

Good trade for getting Outman. Outman is definitely an upgrade over Hill.

Heard that Hagadone actually has an option left. Either he was given a fourth option year or one of his option years (2012 for example) did not count because of timing of the callup or the roster issue he had that July being suspended or whatever.
December 18, 2013 - 6:24 PM EST
I saw CC lee stay in c-bus a little too long due to too many rhrp here and again i know lhrp are always valuable, but Kyle Crockett just maybe special and Hagadone now might be in joeprady of being lost and hagadone does some few leftied can do and that is throw in the high 90's crockett is just a precision lefty. with scrabble i doubt we will carry 3 lefties in the pen however it is intriguing the season is six months long if crockett comes by june 1 that is scrabble hagadone and outman which is 3 distinctly different types of lefties. again i was hoping on waiting until spring to see if an urgent need showed up elsewhere. Just my dimes worth

Not a bad get. Didn't want to rely on having Nick Hagadone finally figure things out

I'd like to ask Terry Francona if he ever had an off-season with the Red Sox like the current Indians one where the team likely lost more talent than it gained.

"Kind of a meh deal to me, he's another scrabble. Not sure we needed another one. We will see I guess."

Gives us more letters to play around with at least.
December 18, 2013 - 5:17 PM EST

That's two good lefties. Gives Kyle Crockett time to develop and lengthens the pen depth. Plus it saves about $2.5 M on the payroll, which should go to another arm or bench option. I like Stubbs, but that sounds like a good move to me.
CA is ?
December 18, 2013 - 4:57 PM EST
Stubbs is going to like the snatch in Denver
December 18, 2013 - 4:47 PM EST
He IS just a LOOGY, even more than Scrabble:

Career OPS vs LHB = .523
Career OPS vs RHB = .844

Career OPS vs LHB = .587
Career OPS vs RHB = .791

Kind of a meh deal to me, he's another scrabble. Not sure we needed another one. We will see I guess.
December 18, 2013 - 4:02 PM EST
I like this move. Nice that Outman's a lefty, but also that he's not just a LOOGY (like scrabble is), but has had pretty decent success in minors and majors as a starter. He joins Carrasco and Tomlin as pitchers on the staff who if needed could man a long-relief role.
December 18, 2013 - 3:34 PM EST
Good add by CA. I think he could do well in the right role. Btw, another guy who does some odd pitching mechanics.

Here's a article and video....

Another Antonetti comfort level deal. Low wages, show up and play a little outfield for even lower wages show up and pitch, This guys stuff is average, reminds me of David Huff. The Antonetti train only goes 2 directions, sideways and backwards.

A good trade for both teams that helps fill out the backend of their 25man rosters. Indians had depth in the outfield after the Murphy pickup, and a need for LH this fits well.

Right now, this means one of Barnes, Hagadone or Hynes are DFAed for Axford (unless another trade is made). Of the three, Barnes has to be the one to go because of his bad year and finishing the year injured. Hynes was just picked up....he might clear because of limited upside so maybe he is the guy. Hagadone is out of a case can be made for all three. We will see.
December 18, 2013 - 2:51 PM EST
Really like this deal. 2 years of Outman for 2 years of Stubbs...saving some money. Stubbs very good 4th outfielder and solid platoon guy but just doesn't fit in Cleveland with Bourn and Brantley. Playing out of position in RF.

Hoping Barnes isn't the one DFAed to make room for Axford but think this deal makes it much more likely. Would have preferred Herrmann but o well.

I am 'ok' with this deal as it address a need in the bullpen and basically closes the door on Rich Hill returning to Tribe.

My one wish is the deal had been expanded to include one of the RH relief arms (ie Hermann/ Guillmet/ Wood/ Lee) and brought back a minor league prospect/ flyer - someone not on the 40 man roster. It would have enable the Tribe to add Axford to the 40 man withou having to remove/ possible lose someone..
