This week, the Carolina Mudcats have had their share of ups and downs on the road.  The team went 3-3 during the week, completing a sweep against Frederick and then proceeding to drop three of four to defending Northern Division champion Potomac.  Tuesday nights return to Five County Stadium was postponed by rain, making Wednesday a doubleheader.

The Mudcats will enjoy a seven-game homestand, facing Salem three times before Frederick comes to Zebulon for a four game set.

Swimming Pretty

Shawn Morimando (LHP): 2 GS, 1-0, 11.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R (3 ER), 9 K, 3 BB

Opening night starter Morimando picked up his first win of the season last Wednesday against Frederick, going six innings and giving up just one unearned run on three hits.  The 21-year-old followed that up with five innings pitched at Potomac where he gave up three runs on five hits (2 homers).

Anthony Gallas (OF): 6 GP, 10 H in 26 AB, 2 RBI, 2 HR

After an injury plagued 2013, Gallas has returned to Zebulon healthy and is swinging the bat very well, collecting a team high 10 hits on the week.  Though he had not driven in any runs prior to Sunday’s slugfest against the Nationals, Gallas changed that on Sunday and Monday, as he hit a solo home run in both games, his first two long balls of the year.

Jeremy Lucas (C/1B): 6 GP, 8 H in 24 AB, 7 RBI, 1 HR, 4 BB, 2 K

Lucas had a team leading seven runs batted in during the week, and four of them came on one swing of the bat.  In the second inning of Carolina’s 12-2 win over Potomac, Lucas hit a grand slam, the first for the Mudcats since Tyler Naquin did so in 2013.

Dylan Baker (RHP): 1 GS, 1-0, 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB

It’s not often that a pitcher moves up a level in professional baseball and baffles an opposing team the way Baker did against Frederick.  In his six innings pitched, Baker faced the minimum 18 batters without allowing a single runner to get on base.  That is quite the impressive debut.

On the Hook

Dylan Baker (RHP): 1 GS, 1-0, 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB

If Baker had such an impressive debut, what is he doing in this section too?  Baker was actually scheduled to make two starts this week, but was unable to start Sunday’s game against Potomac as he injured his lower right leg before he ever threw a pitch.  Baker is scheduled to see a specialist in the next few days, and he is expected to be out awhile.

Torsten Boss (2B): 5 GP, 2 H in 21 AB, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 4K

The newly acquired second baseman has struggled greatly in his first week with the Mudcats.  Boss went 0 for his first 10 with the team, and then went just 1 for his next 13.

Todd Hankins (INF): 5 GP, 4 H in 25 AB, 1 R, 3 2B, 1RBI, 1 BB, 9K

When three of your four hits in a week are doubles, it doesn’t look that bad.  But when you strike out nine times during the week, it does.  Hankins has been batting leadoff this season.  For Carolina to succeed, they need him to get on base more for the people behind him in the order.

Logan Vick (OF): 4 GP, 1H in 13 AB, 1 RBI, 2 SB, 3 BB, 7K

When you are striking out in more than half of your official at-bats during a week, you are struggling at the plate.  Logan Vick is clearly struggling right now and off to a very slow start.

Torsten Boss was officially activated to the Mudcats roster on Wednesday.  To make room for Boss, infiederYhoxian Medina was transferred to Mahoning Valley.

Fish on the Line

While Baker was injured on Sunday and outfielder LeVon Washington has been sitting out with a sore oblique, no players were actually added to the disabled list.

It's definitively months, and I've heard a minimum of two. I'll get more definitive information tomorrow, if it doesn't come out beforehand...
