Game Recaps 6/2

June 3, 2008
Five Lake County Captains were named to the SAL All-Star game: Left-handed starters Kelvin De La Cruz, Ryan Miller and Ryan Morris, right-handed closer Vinnie Pestano, and outfielder Roman Pena.

The International League today announced that Bisons LHP Jeremy Sowers has been named the IL Pitcher of the Week for May 26-June 1. Sowers went 2-0 with a 0.69ERA in his two starts for Buffalo during the week.

Aeros closer Randy Newsom was named Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week today for the week ending June 1st. He is the second Akron player to receive a weekly award this season after LHP David Huff won the award for the week ending May 18th. Newsom recorded two wins, three saves, and posted a 1.80 ERA in five appearances last week.

Catcher Richard Martinez has been added to the Lake County roster and Ramon Hernandez has been reassigned to extended spring training.

Kinston Can't Crack Rocks, Losing the Opener 2-1

The Kinston Indians lost their second game in a row, dropping the opener of a four game series to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 2-1, Monday night in Delaware. Kinston scored with an RBI double in the first inning from Nick Weglarz but struggled to get anything done the rest of the night. The K-Tribe bats managed just two hits the rest of the way, and the final 17 men were retired in a row by Wilmington pitching.

Wilmington got on the board with an unearned in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout by Jeff Howell that was set up by a passed ball from new catcher Adam Davis. The Blue Rocks took the lead in the sixth on an infield single that hit off of relief pitcher Neil Wagner that sent the runner home from third base. That run belonged to Jeanmar Gomez (2-6) who takes the tough luck loss.

Ed Cegarra, the 19-year old making his second start for Wilmington gets the win after going seven innings and striking out three.

Kinston looks to snap the win streak tomorrow evening with Steven Wright (2-3) on the hill. First pitch is 7:05 in game two of a four game set to complete the seven game road trip.
