Akron, Kinston, and Mahoning Valley all had scheduled off days on Monday.

Indianapolis downs Columbus 2-1

The Clippers opened a stretch of seven consecutive games against Indianapolis with a 2-1 loss at Victory Field. Indy opened the scoring with a Tagg Bozied solo homer in the second off Columbus starter Mike Gosling. It would be the only run Gosling allowed over four solid innings.

The Clippers had several opportunities with runners in scoring position, but could not capitalize. Andy Cannizaro came closest to a clutch hit in the second with Stephen Head at second, but Head was thrown out at the plate. Columbus was 1-for-13 with runners on base.

Indianapolis righty Daniel McCutchen threw 7.2 scoreless innings and Jean Machi recorded the final four outs for the save.

The lone Clippers run came in the last at-bat and there were no hits involved. Wes Hodges drew a lead-off walk from Machi and stole second. Hodges advanced to third on a Head grounder and scored when Lou Marson also grounded out.

Kenny Ray threw four innings of relief, allowing one run and saving the beleaguered bullpen for another day. Ray struck out four batters.

The second game of the series is scheduled for 7:00pm Tuesday. Carlos Carrasco looks to go 3-0 for Columbus as he faces lefty Phil Dumatrait.

Captains Win 8-2

A big first inning and 5.1 scoreless innings by Captains starter Danny Salazar led the Lake County Captains to an 8-2 victory over the Augusta Greenjackets on Monday. The Captains had twelve hits and have had double digit hits in three straight games.

The Captains jumped out to a nice lead in the top of the first inning when Bo Greenwell walked and went to third on a single by Jeremie Tice. Nate Recknagel singled home Greenwell with Tice taking second. Karexon Sanchez followed with three run home run his ninth round tripper of the year. Chris Nash singled and scored on a double by John Allman and the Captains led 5-0.

The lead went to 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Adam Abraham scored on an error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Bo Greenwell. The Jackets got two runs in the top of the eighth inning when Josh Mazzola hit a two run home run off of Captains reliever Brian Grening and it was 6-2. The Captains got both runs back in the bottom of the inning when Mark Thompson singled home Abraham and Greenwell knocked in Thompson to make it 8-2.

Captains' Danny Salazar (5-4) got the win going 5.1 scoreless innings and allowing four hits, walking two and striking out three. Kaimi Mead relieved Salazar and worked 1.2 scoreless innings. GreenJackets starter RHP Orlando Yntema (0-2) took the loss working four innings and allowing five runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out three.

The Captains and Greenjackets play game two of the series on Tuesday at 7:00 PM with the Captains sending RHP Trey Haley (3-6, 5.49) to the hill to oppose LHP Eric Surkamp (7-5, 3.58).
