Akron had a scheduled day off on Easter Sunday.

Columbus Drops 3rd Straight

Columbus lost 5-1 to Louisville on Sunday, their third straight defeat. The Clippers had many chances to put up runs in the game, but never could get the big hit needed to breakthrough on the scoreboard. They had the bases loaded three times, twice with less than two outs, and failed to score.

Right-hander Kirk Saarloos made his Clippers debut and got the loss going 6 innings and allowed 7 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk and struck out 7 batters. Lefty Ryan Edell was called up from Double-A Akron shortly before the game, and made his Triple-A debut going a scoreless inning of relief.

Offensively, outfielder Michael Brantley was 2-for-4 with a walk, third baseman Wes Hodges was 2-for-5 with a 2B, first baseman Michael Aubrey was 1-for-2 with an RBI and walk, and designated hitter Andy Marte was 2-for-4.

Outfielder Matt LaPorta did not play after suffering a strain to his right midsection on Saturday night. He is day-to-day and expected to be okay.

Kinston Beats Winston-Salem Splits Series

KINSTON, NC - K-Tribe starter Zach Putnam notched his first professional win and the offense scored six, two-out runs as the Indians beat Winston-Salem 6-2 Sunday afternoon.

Putnam, the 2008 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year out of Michigan, went five innings giving up five hits and one earned run. Putnam struck out five and walked two batters. The bullpen did the rest as reliever Chen-Chang Lee pitched two hitless innings from the bullpen. Garrison Campfield finished up, giving up one earned run through the final two frames.

Kinston got on the board in the bottom of the third with back to back RBI hits from Matt McBride and Matt Brown. With Kinston leading 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Eastern North Carolina native Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-out RBI single. McBride, Brown and Ronald Rivas each followed up with RBI doubles to put the game out of reach. Chisenhall, McBride, Brown and Rivas each had two hits for Kinston.

The K-Tribe’s 11 game homestand continues Monday night as the Wilmington Blue Rocks come to Kinston. Charlotte, NC native Ryan Morris will make his Carolina League debut on the mound for Kinston, game time 7pm.

CAPTAINS FALL FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT TIME

(Eastlake, OH) – The Hagerstown Suns scored five runs in the eighth inning en route to a 9-2 victory over the Lake County Captains on Sunday. The Suns took the last three games of the series.

The Suns jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off of Captains starter Ryan Miller when Stephen Englund singled home Michael Guerrero. The Captains took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Donnie Webb hit a two run home run off of Suns starter Ricardo Pecina and the Captains led 2-1.

The Suns tied it 2-2 in the fourth inning when Miller walked four straight batters. The Suns took the lead in the fifth inning when Derek Norris singled home a run and Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly and it was 4-2. The Suns added five runs in the eighth inning capped of by a two RBI single by Steven Souza. The Captains helped things out with two errors in the inning and it was 9-2.

Miller took the loss going 4.1 innings allowing three runs on only one hit, walking five and striking out seven. Chris Lugo pitched two scoreless relief innings for the Suns to get the win.

Michael Valadez, Jeremie Tice and Adam Abraham all added two hits each for the Captains. The Lakewood BlueClaws come to town on Monday for a three game series. LHP T.J. McFarland will make his first start of the year and he will be opposed by the Claws LHP Jacob Diekman.
