Clippers baffled in opener

The Columbus Clippers offense was stagnant in a 6-1 loss to the Louisville Bats on Thursday.

Bats starting pitcher Ramon Ramirez entered the game with a winless record and a season ERA over five. Against the Clippers however, Ramirez was much better. He pitched six innings, striking out three while only allowing an Andy Marte home run in the second inning.

The Louisville offense got started beginning of the game when an error allowed Norris Hopper to reach second. After a walk, Chuck Lofgren gave up a two-run double to Drew Sutton and Wes Bankston later singled home Sutton.

Wilkin Castillo lifted a homer in the second inning to put the Bats in front 4-1. Lofgren allowed four runs, three earned, and seven hits in the six innings. He didn't allow any damage after the second inning, walking one and striking out five for the game.

The Clippers went quietly for four innings only twice were they able to manage multiple base runners.

Captains win, Haley earns first professional win

Trey Haley got his first professional win and Adam Abraham drove in two runs as the Lake County Captains edged the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-2 on Thursday.

The Captains jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Delvi Cid grounded out but Michael Valdez scored from third base and it was 1-0. The Captains made it 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Adam Abraham doubled home Cid. The Shorebirds got a run in the top of the seventh inning when Elvin Polanco grounded out scoring Ron Welty. Abraham added another RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 3-1. Polanco drove in his second run in the ninth inning to end the scoring at 3-2.

Captains' starter Scott Lewis, on a rehab assignment from the Cleveland Indians, pitched three perfect innings striking out three and did not get a decision. Haley (1-3) followed Lewis in the top of the fourth inning and went five innings and allowed one run on one hit, walking two and striking out four. Steve Smith pitched the ninth inning to pick up his tenth save.

Shorebirds starter Oliver Drake (1-3) took the loss pitching six innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits, walking one and striking out five.
