Giambi activated, Wood optioned to Columbus
The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have activated designated hitter Jason Giambi from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster they have optioned right-handed pitcher Blake Wood to Triple-A Columbus.
Giambi has been on the disabled list since March 30 after suffering a right rib fracture on March 7 vs. the Chicago Cubs (hit by pitch). Giambi, 43, is currently fourth among active Major League players in home runs (438) and RBI (1436) and is making his 2014 debut on the Major League roster. He spent three games rehabbing with Double-A Akron (April 11-16) last week and went 0-for-8 at the plate with four strikeouts.
Wood has gone 0-1 with a 7.11 ERA in seven relief outings thus far in 2014 (6.1 IP, 4H, 5R/ER, 7 BB, 7 K). The move leaves the Indians with 12 pitchers and 13 position players.
I would have been much more surprised if they had sent him down, especially after Morgan gets replaced by Bourn, and Bourn has done virtually nothing upon his return. That just about sealed the fact Chisenhall couldn't be sent down- it won't matter much whether there's 7 or 8 guys in the bullpen if you can't score and if your starters don't pitch well, and largely, they haven't.
Right now, the Indians need to get the bats going and try to play from out in front (I.e. The starters have to start pitching better), and Chisenhall can help with that first part.
