The Cleveland Indians today announced they have purchased the contract of catcher/outfielder Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus.  To make room on the Major League and 40-man roster, the Indians designated catcher Mike Redmond for assignment.

Gimenez, 27, has spent the entire season to date at Columbus as he has hit .276 (54-196) with 32 runs scored, 10 doubles, 9 HR and 32 RBI in 55 games.  He has appeared in 34 games in the outfield, 18 at catcher, 3 at first base and 1 game at third base with the Clippers.  With runners in scoring position Gimenez has hit .304 (17-56) with 3 HR and 22 RBI.  He was outrighted to Columbus on February 24 to make room for the signing of Russell Branyan but remained with the Indians in big league camp as a non-roster invitee.

Last year, Gimenez began the season at Columbus and spent the last four months of the season with the Indians as he was recalled on May 31.  He made his Major League debut on June 3 at Minnesota and belted his 1st Major League hit and home run on June 4 at Minnesota off Scott Baker.  With Cleveland Gimenez appeared in 18 games at first base, 14 games in left field, 7 games in right field and 8 games at catcher.  He wears #8.

Redmond batted .206 (13-63) with 7 runs scored, 4 doubles and 5 RBI in 22 games with the Indians in 2010.  He appeared in just 3 games since June 8th.
