The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Nick Hagadone from Triple-A Columbus and optioned right-handed pitcher Mark Lowe to Columbus. Also, right-handed pitcher Blake Wood has been claimed by the Kansas City Royals on outright waivers.

Hagadone has made all 18 of his 2014 relief appearances with the AAA Columbus Clippers, going 2-3 with a save and a 3.09 ERA (23.1IP, 18H, 8ER, 9BB, 35K, .222AVG).  He is averaging 13.5 strikeouts per 9.0IP and has fanned 35 of the 96 Triple-A batters he has faced (36.5%) while limiting left-handed hitters to a .171 (6-35, 21K, all singles) average against.  The Seattle, Washington native has not allowed an earned run over his last 7 outings (9.1IP, 4H, 1BB, 17K, 40BF). This marks his second stint with Cleveland in 2014 (May 3, did not pitch).

Lowe had a 2.08 ERA in four appearances with the indians, and in 4.1 innings allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and had 5 strikeouts. Wood was designated for assignment last week when the Indians added catcher George Kottaras to the roster.

Sorry to see Wood go but he did have his opportunity to open the season with the club but unfortunately wasn't able to capitalize on it. Some seize the moment, others struggle to find their place and unfortunately for his career here, there just wasn't the time for him to find his rhythm.
A small quibble however, looking at Lowe's #'s, they are quite similar to Wood's when he was sent down, though without the damage to the ERA. Perhaps Lowe would've been less likely to be claimed? Only matters if you value Wood of course and I have to assume the FO didn't, at least not that much.
