Indians acquire Gimenez, place Gomes on 7-day DL
The Cleveland Indians today announced they have acquired catcher Chris Gimenez from the Texas Rangers for future considerations. They also placed catcher Yan Gomes on the 7-day Disabled List with concussion symptoms, retroactive to August 22.
Gimenez, 31, has split the 2014 season between Texas and Triple-A Round Rock, hitting .262 (28-107) with 10 doubles, 11 RBI and 13 runs scored in 34 games for the Rangers from May 20 until being taken off the roster on August 7. He started behind the plate in 12 of Yu Darvish’s 22 starts for Texas in 2014. He started the campaign and spent the last ten days in Round Rock where he hit .284 (38-134) with 4 2B, 2 3B, 6vHR & 22 RBI in 39 games, including a .302 (13-43, 1.024OPS) mark off left-handed pitching.
The Gilroy, CA native returns to the Indians organization after beginning his pro career with the club in 2004 (19th round, Nevada-Reno), spending a combined 73 games at the Major League level in 2009-2010. He spent the 2012-13 seasons in the Tampa Bay organization between Durham & St. Pete.
Gomes begins his first career stint on the Major League Disabled List after being injured in the fifth inning on Thursday’s game at Minnesota. The Indians will play with a 24-man roster this evening and will enhance the roster prior to tomorrow’s game against the Houston Astros at 1:05PM ET.
