The Cleveland Indians today announced they have acquired left-handed pitcher Nick Maronde from the Los Angeles Angels for a player to be named or cash. He has been optioned by the Indians to the minor leagues, though an affiiliate has yet to be determined.

To make room on the 40-man roster the Indians have transferred designated hitter Jason Giambi from the 15-day Disabled List to the 60-day DL.

Maronde, 24, has appeared in 33 Major League games for the Angels over the last three seasons since 2012, compiling no record with a 7.13 ERA in 33 relief outings (17.2IP, 22H, 16R/14ER, 18BB, 19K). He has split the 2014 season between the LA Angels, AAA Salt Lake, AA Arkansas and the AZL Angels prior to being designated for assignment on July 10. The Lexington, KY native was Los Angeles’ 3r round pick in the 2011 draft out of the University of Florida. He owns a career Minor League record of 13-8 with a 3.23 ERA in 90 games/29 starts (220.1IP, 176H, 79ER, 105BB, 227SO, 9.3SO/9.0IP, 7.2 hits/9.0IP).

Might pan out as good pick-up since only 24 and left handed. Have to see how he pitched with our minors.

He was their #2 prospect just last year!!! How does he go from that high of ranking (even within a weak system) to being dealt for a PTBNL???? Tony??

Saw a lot of Maronde in college and never liked him. He has had success though. Is he injured?
