The Cleveland Indians have announced that they have acquired infielderJohn McDonald from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a Player To Be Named Later and/or cash considerations.

To make room on the 40-man roster they have transferred right-handed pitcher Brett Myers from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. No corresponding roster move on the 25-man roster has been announced, but infielder Juan Diaz is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Columbus.

McDonald, 38, appeared in 16 games for the Pirates this season - 13 at shortstop and four at second base - before being placed on the 15-day DL on May 15 with lower back discomfort and right elbow inflammation. He was on a rehab assignment with the Pirates' Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate and in 10 games was hitting .265 (9-34).

This will be McDonald’s second stint with the Indians organization as he spent his first seven big league seasons with the club from 1999-2004 after being selected by Cleveland in the 12th round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft. He has appeared in games at shortstop (568), second base (209), third base (127) and left field (6) over parts of 15 Major League seasons with Cleveland, Toronto, Detroit, Arizona and Pittsburgh, registering a .975 fielding pct. (80 ER/3140 TC), while batting .237 (549-2320) with 103 doubles, 14 triples, 27 home runs and 202 RBI in 970 games.

The pickup of McDonald gives the Indians the veteran utlity option they wanted when Mike Aviles was pushed into the starting lineup after Asdrubal Cabrera went down with  a quad injury. As noted here at the IBI last week, the callup of Diaz was only expected to be temporary while the Indians scoured the waiver wire and available trade options for a veteran utility player.

Myers, 32, has been on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation since April 20 and last pitched for the Indians on April 19 at Houston.

Because, sadly, he is an upgrade over Juan Diaz. That's how bad Juan Diaz as a utility option. Indians wanted a veteran utility option....I guess this was the best option out there.
