The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have claimed first baseman Mike McDade off outright waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.

McDade, 23, spent the 2012 season between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas where he hit a combined .285 with 19 doubles, 1 triple, 17 home runs, 67 RBI, and .806 OPS in 118 games.  He finished the final month of the season at Las Vegas and hit .338 with 2 HR, 18 RBI and .885 OPS in 18 games.

McDade is a switch-hitter and was Toronto’s 6th round selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Silverado High School. He was named Class-A Dunedin’s Team MVP in 2010 and in 2011 at AA New Hampshire he finished 3rd in the Eastern League with 37 doubles and was a midseason EL All-Star.

The Indians made room on the 40-man roster by designating left-handed pitcher Chris Seddon for assignment. This is not the first time Seddon has been outrighted, so he can elect free agency.

I'm hoping the Indians just field an entire team in Columbus of first baseman...why stop now....

Art spoken like a true beat writer. I really like the homework. I'm convinced he could make an impact. I thought Russ candied looked nice, less powerful, more utility, but I'm not seeing in candied what I expected at the job level. I hope made can produce in the job the same way. and he looks considerably smaller then Prince. I mean he's no string bean but come on Prince is a buick

Seems like a pretty reasonable pick up to me. His walk rate significantly improved this past season, yet he was able to maintain a decent HR rate. In the past he has hit quite a few doubles, and his performance has shown some improvement as he has advanced. His AA performance this season might indicate he was a bit pissed at returning to AA after doing well in 2011 there, but his BB/K rate was pretty poor in 2011 and he significantly improved it this season.

At only 23, I like him more than guys like Weglarz or Lars Anderson. His growth in plate discipline while still maintaining fairly decent power is promising (at least as a free pickup).

I like this move and the Fernando judge o.e if he's a starter. in 7 GS he had a WAR of 1 small sample but its project. plus most of his stats had relief appearances that year he was the most productive. and didn't bounce around as much 2010 for nym if I'm not mistaken.

"Great, just what we need; a fat black dude."

So I take it you wouldn't want to see Prince Fielder in a Tribe uniform?

I'm not sure I get the point of this pickup, but I guess the Indians are searching for cheap 1B alternatives for the future. Toronto thought enough to roster him, so we will see I guess. As for LaPorta, it is way too early to worry about who plays where and how guys fit at Columbus. Seen it too many times where injuries and such in spring training change everything. They will make the guys fit if they all start the season there.

I like the pickup, but now there is no room for laporta at columbus anymore unless one of the 1B (anderson is probably the only realistic possibility) makes it in cleveland. Does this mean the indians aren't looking to pick up a legit FA 1B, or is laporta in danger of being released from the system entirely?

I've got Indian fever !! Can't wait to see him try and hit a major league curveball !
Same as last year

Sure it's great but we need to pick up better off the wire than the past week. Ryan Sweeny, Phil Humber, and others are better looking on our team than the career minor leaguers we recently invited to spring training.

Chris Seddon was going to save this franchise and now he's gone. Brilliant (not)

Very much like this pick up. When I saw that he had been originally designated, I said this was a guy we needed to pick up. He's been young for his league most stops (or at least not older than the league) and held his own. He's a switch hitter with some pop. Perfect pick up for only losing Seddon.
