Today the Cleveland Indians have announced that they have claimed first baseman/left fielder Vinny Rottino off of waivers from the New York Mets. To make room on the 40-man roster for him the Indians have designated right-handed pitcher Chris Schwinden for assignment.

Rottino, 32, is a 10-year minor league veteran that was originally signed as an undrafted minor league free agent in 2003. He is a career .295 hitting in the minors with 77 HR, 557 RBI, and .786 OPS, and over his career he has walked 401 times and struck out 563 times in 4421 plate appearances. This season he hit .307 with 4 HR, 25 RBI and .840 OPS in 36 games for Triple-A Buffalo and in 18 games for the Mets hit .182 with 2 HR, 5 RBI and .702 OPS (33 at bats).

Schwinden, 25, appeared in only three games since being claimed off waiver by the Indians a few weeks ago. In three starts for Triple-A Columbus he went 1-2 with a 5.87 ERA (15.1 IP, 16 H, 10 ER, 4 HR, 6 BB, 5 K).

Rottino will be assigned to Triple-A Columbus in the coming days and a roster move is expected at that time. With the Indians already loaded with first base/outfield types in Columbus with Matt LaPorta, Russ Canzler, and Jared Goedert, one of them may possibly be called up to Cleveand to make room, or even be traded.
