The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have designated left-handed pitcher David Huff for assignment and recalled left-handed pitcherScott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus.

Barnes begins his third stint (April 28, May 5-9) with Cleveland, posting an ERA of 4.50 in three relief outings to date with the Indians (4.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 4 K, .077 AVG).  With Columbus this season he is 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA in 12 games, all in relief (15.2 IP, 14 H, 10 ER, 8 BB, 19 K, .255 AVG).  He is averaging 10.9 strikeouts per 9.0IP with the Clippers and has limited Triple-A left-handed hitters to a .222 (4-18) average against.

The Indians have 10 days to trade, release or outright Huff to the minors. As a second time outright, if he clears waivers he can decline his outright assignment and choose free agency or he can accept it and go to Columbus. He likely will clear waivers because he is out of options and a team would be forced to add him to their 25-man roster, and he also will very likely decline his outright assignment and elect free agency so he can sign with any team.
