Indians nontender Marson, make other roster moves

The Indians today announced that they tendered contracts to outfielderMichael Brantley, right-handed starting pitcher Justin Masterson, right-handed reliever Vinnie Pestano, left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski, outfielder Drew Stubbs and right-handed starting pitcher Josh Tomlin.

They did not tender a contract to catcher Lou Marson and he is now a free agent, though there is a possibility he is brought back on a minor league deal with the club with an invite to major league spring training.

The Indians also announced that they have agreed to 2014 contracts with right-handed pitcher Frank Herrmannand right-handed pitcher Blake Wood, thus avoiding arbitration with both. Some will recall the Indians did this withJensen Lewis in December 2010 - though it should be noted that Lewis was designated for assignment that spring.

They also did not tender contracts to outfielder Matt Carson and right-handed pitcher Tyler Cloyd, though neither were eligible for free agency. I am unsure yet of this rule, but the club says they are now free agents. The roster is now at 38 players.

I like Carlos Perez if they want to move Santana completely out of catching, Id like to take a flyer on Brian Fletcher, but don't think he would fit on the 25 man and could be a poor mans Shelly Duncan. I like Moran's K and BB rates but he gives up too many hits, but could be worth a gamble as the 2nd lefty.

Here's a decent rundown of some guys available for the rule 5 draft...

There's been some chatter on Mariners 25 yo LHRP Stephen Moran who has posted some strong k-rates (10+/9IP).

in regards to the rule 5 draft. They will leave a spot open for it, but that doesn't mean they will attempt to fill it. My guess is they have a very short list (like all teams do) and if they can take exactly who they want if given the chance they take it.. IMO this is a year where they can make a play for some BP depth/options ala Ambriz... Hopefully it will work out a little better than that though,

I don't see where a Rule 5 guy might fit. They already have plenty of utility, relief and outfield depth. Perhaps if they see a power bat they want to get a look at like McGuinness last year.....but I doubt it. Of course, there could always be a surprise.

Do you think that the Indians might use one spot for picking someone from the Rule 5 draft? Is there anyone in that draft the Indians should consider?
