Indians put Gomes on paternity leave, DFA Johnson, call up two
CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced the following roster moves relative to the Major League roster:
Placed C YAN GOMES on the Paternity List.
Purchased the contract of C GEORGE KOTTARAS (#53) from AAA Columbus
Recalled LHP NICK HAGADONE (#50) from AAA Columbus.
Designated INF ELLIOT JOHNSON for assignment.
Gomes left the team last night to be with his wife, Jennifer, who is expecting the couple’s first child. He is hitting .261 (23-88) with 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 10 RBI in 26 games for the season. The maximum stay on the Paternity List is 3 days.
Kottaras (coh-TERRIS), 30, signed with Cleveland on April 3 as a Minor League free agent after spending spring training with the Chicago Cubs, who acquired the Toronto native from Kansas City in November. He was assigned to the AAA Columbus Clippers upon signing with the Indians and has appeared in 9 games thus far (2-25, .080).
Hagadone, 28, has spent the entire season at Columbus, going 1-2 w/a save and a 3.97 ERA in 10 relief appearances (11.1IP, 12 H, 5 ER, 6 BB, 13 K). Over his last seven outings he owns an ERA of 1.17 (7.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 11 K) for the Clippers and he has limited left-handed Triple-A batters to a .222 (4-18, all singles) average against.
Career numbers before yesterday included a .324 OBP, .322 wOBA, and 98 wRC+. Nothing to write home about but solid for a catcher. Consider too Brantley's career numbers are .330 OBP, .314 wOBA, and 99 wRC+....Kottaras's bat is essentially Brantley's.
Don't know about everyone else but Perez has more than a month of AAA hitting at a decent clip to prove that he has the goods to play ML baseball and warrant a spot on the 40 IMO.
Nice to hear that it's Tomln getting the start on Tuesday nite but it means a pair of moves to be made on Tuesday..
One can only wonder if we actually want to win.
I can't agree with this decision..and understand the ramifications of Kottarras's contract situation, as if that really matters.. smh...
