The Cleveland Indians have just announced that Daisuke Matsuzaka and Matt Capps have both re-signed with the Cleveland Indians. Both players will remain with the Indians in the major league camp until Saturday.

The moves were expected, with the Indians releasing the two players to avoid paying them both a $100,000 retention bonus. I'm not quite sure why the two wouldn't want the extra $100,000, but I'm sure the Indians gave them incentives to get back to the big leagues that would far excede the $100,000 payout.

Both players will report to Columbus when the teams break camp to come north.

JWahoo, the releases were already coordinated with the player beforehand. Not releasing them would have bound them to their old contract. By releasing them and resigning as they set up, they were able to come up with a new contract for both players. I am not sure what the deals are, but I am sure the $100K or even more is included to entice them to stick around in the minors for a few months.

Then why even do it? If it wasn't about saving the money what was it about?

Did they actually get a better deal? I am just saying I think having these two guys as backups is worth the extra 100,000 and releasing them just to save the money seems cheap. I think its ok to question your team sometimes. Its not a big deal at all but if it wasn't to save the money I guess I don't understand why it needed to be done.

If it was cheap and petty then neither player would have resigned.

I don't like this. Its cheap and seems petty.

Doesn't anyone else think so? .
