The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have recalled right-handed reliever Vinnie Pestano from Triple-A Columbus and have optioned right-handed pitcher Zach McAllister to Columbus.

Pestano, 29, has spent most of the 2014 season at Triple-A Columbus, going 2-3 with a 1.78 ERA in 25 relief appearances for the Clippers (25.1IP, 18H, 7R/5ER, 7BB, 32K, .198AVG). He has not allowed a run over his last 13 appearances with the Clippers (13.0IP, 7H, 2BB, 12K) dating back to May 18.  He has held right-handed hitters to a .125 (7-56) average against during his time in Columbus and limited batters to a .175 (7-40) mark with runners on base.  He opened the season with Cleveland before being optioned to Columbus on April 9, appearing in 3 games (2.2 IP, 8H, 6R/4ER).

After a rainout on Wednesday and with two off days this coming week on Monday and Thursday the Indians have no need for a fifth starter until July 1st. That date is more than 10 days away so the Indians can go with a four-man rotation and nine-man bullpen until then and be allowed to recall McAllister in time to make that start on July 1 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. In the meantime McAllister will go to Columbus and should make two starts there, starting with the first one on Friday or Saturday in order to have him in line for that recall to Cleveland on July 1.

House was optioned out earlier in the week...

They still have 5 starters on the team, though. With House, Bauer, Tomlin, Masterson and Kluber. Are they moving House to the bullpen?

Connor, I was thinking the same thing.

The best thing about this is that an option does not get burned on McCallister because he'll be back up before the 20 day rule

If Pestano is back to his pre-2013 self then that will really be a great boost to the pen. If they decide to commit to Carlos as the low-leverage multi-inning closer that would be even better and at least alleviate the shortcomings of the starters.

Good- get ZachMac some more reps to get sharper and stronger. It will be interesting to see if anything has changed w Vinnie. Atchison is looking a little tired, it would be great to get even 95% of the old Vinnie back. Cross yer fingers.
