The Indians today announced that have released five players from their minor league contracts: shortstop Jairo Kelly, outfielder Chia-Ching Lin, outfielder Andrew Campbell, catcher Dwight Childs, and infielder Davis Stoneburner.

The first notebale release this spring is that of Jairo Kelly, a player that was signed in July of 2009 and came in as a high profile international signing. He was in Baseball America's Top 25 listing for players eligible that year to be signed during the International Signing Period, and received a very large six figure signing bonus. He struggled with injuries and inconsistency over his career, and after given a starting opportunity last year at short season Single-A Mahoning Valley in which he struggled mightily, the writing was on the wall this spring.

As was the case with the nine releases announced over the weekend, none of these players were ranked in the IBI Top 100 listing this season. That said, it is always tough to see a member of the Indians' family part ways and see a dream crushed. Hopefully these players will find a new landing spot soon.

A very brutal business, but you gotta hit!

Definitely a sad day for those four. I am a little surprised on Kelly but he was passed by several shortstop prospects. A friend of mine lead his team in wins one year and was released the next. He said "It's a brutal business".
