The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have purchased the contracts of right-handed pitcher Scott Atchison, designated hitter Jason Giambi and outfielder Nyjer Morgan and added them to the 40-man and 25-man roster.

To make room on the roster they have designated right-handed pitcher Preston Guilmet, right-handed pitcherFrank Herrmann and left-handed pitcher Colt Hynes for assignment. If any of them clear waivers they would remain Indians and have to accept an assignment to the minors as they are first time outrights - unless the Indians release them from their contract.

They have also placed outfielder Michael Bourn (left hamstring strain) and Giambi (rib fracture) on the 15-day Disabled List, both retroactive to March 21. They have also re-assigned outfielder Matt Carson and infielder Ryan Rohlinger to minor league camp (should open at Triple-A Columbus).

The Indians open the 2014 season on Monday night in Oakland with the following 25 players:

I am a little surprised on Guilmet over Barnes though not shocked (Hags and Barnes are the only LHRP in the minors now on the 40-man I do believe). Happy to see Barnes get one last look. Still a big fan (one of the few left).

Definitely sucks for the guys DFAed but as with most guys like that, they'll have a job still in baseball either with the Tribe after clearing waivers or with another organization after being claimed.

Hynes is a soft tosser and kind of a minor league lifer who got a show with the Padres last year. He's a depth guy and I would be surprised if he gets picked up. Barnes still has a little more value....had it at the time Hynes was picked up and still has it.

Sounds to me that the Indians value Barnes more than they do Hynes. If Herrmann was all the way back from TJ surgery, I believe Barnes would have been DFA instead of him.

No surprises on the DFAs....they were three of the four names I mentioned here last week. Scott Barnes lives to fight another day! Feel bad for the DFA guys, especially Herrmann who just came back from TJ surgery....though just another example of how tough this business is.
