The Cleveland Indians today announced the signing of free agent right-handed pitcher Scott Atchison and outfielder Jeff Francoeur to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to major league spring training camp.

Atchison, 37, owns a career major league record of 10-10 with one save and a 3.64 ERA in 205 Major League appearances (1 GS, 255.0 IP, 244 H, 103 ER, 71 BB, 192 K, .253 AVG) since debuting with the Seattle Mariners in 2004. He spent the 2013 season with the New York Mets, appearing in 50 games and finishing third on the club with ten holds despite a pair of trips to the disabled list (right elbow strain and right groin strain).

Achison's best season came in 2012 with the Boston Red Sox (1.58 ERA, 42 games), compiling the fourth-lowest relief ERA in Major League Baseball among relievers with at least 50.0 innings pitched. He began his professional career in 1999 after being selected by Seattle in the 49th round of the 1998 draft out of TCU.

Francoeur, who turns 30 on Wednesday, owns a career major league batting average of .263 with 250 doubles, 25 triples, 140 home runs and 618 RBI in 1227 games with Atlanta, New York (NL), Texas, Kansas City and San Francisco. He has driven in at least 75 runs over four different campaigns (2006-07, 2009, 2011), owns a Rawlings Gold Glove (2007) and has the second-most assists (121) of any active Major League outfielder. As recent as 2011 for Kansas City he hit .285/.329/.476/.805 with 47 doubles, 20 HR and 87 RBI in 153 games. Last season he split time between the Royals and Giants and hit .204 with 3 HR, 17 RBI and .536 OPS in 81 games.

Much like Jason Kubel, Francoeur was a pretty decent hitter (though a bit low on the walks rate) who seems to have run out of gas at a surprisingly young age. Not really sure why this happens, but it seems like these types of players don't have much of a track record of a bounce back in their careers.
