The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent infielder Elliot Johnson to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training camp.

Johnson, 29, split the 2013 season between Kansas City and Atlanta, hitting .261 (24-for-92) with 5 doubles 2 triples, 10 RBI and 8 stolen bases as the regular second baseman for the Braves over the last five weeks of the season after being claimed off waivers from the Royals on August 21.  The Safford, AZ native also started all four games of Atlanta’s NL Division Series match-up against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The versatile switch-hitter has appeared at every position in the infield (164g-SS; 97g-2B; 14g-3B; 2g-1B) and 18 games in the outfield after beginning his career in the Tampa Bay Rays system in 2002. He debuted with the Rays in 2008, appeared in a career-high 123 games for Tampa in 2012 and was traded to Kansas City along with right-handed pitcher James Shields in exchange for outfielder Wil Myers prior to the 2013 campaign.

No word on that, but most of these veteran minor league deals with ML invites now come with April 1 opt outs anyway. Plus teams have to decide whether to keep them around before then or pay that $100K bonus. A great many of these major league invites won't make the team nor stick in the minors. Spring training will of course determine what happens.

Any word about opt out dates/ opportunities?? Like the signing as depth in CBus but the next question is spreading the at bats to developing players and keep others sharp if needed in Cleveland

Just what we needed in Columbus. Free insurance against so many things: injuries to Aviles or Kip, Chiz being demoted and Aviles needing to cover, Azdrubal trade, JRam and RRod not developing enough to cover short term needs, etc.

I was curious about Matt Lawson's status with the team, I think this answers the question.
