Indians sign Scott Downs to minor league deal
The Cleveland Indians today announced they have signed free agent left-handed pitcher Scott Downs to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League camp.
Downs, 38, ranks 5th among active left-handed pitchers with 619 Major League appearances as he has limited left-handed batters to a .219 (219-998, .287/.322/.608) average against during his 13-year Major League career with seven big league teams. He split the 2014 season between the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals after signing with the White Sox last January, ending the campaign with 17 appearances for the American League Champion Royals (3.14 ERA, 5ER/14.1IP). He led the A.L. in games pitched (81) in 2007 with Toronto and owns a career Major League ERA of 3.56 (751.1IP, 729H, 297ER, 575 SO).
I think I read that the Pirates may have some interest in Hagdone.
For those who care...Downs pitched for the Expos early in his career.
Depth, veteran add. Maybe because there's a trade brewing, hard to say, the loss of Arajuo in AA hurt (to the Phillies). I think they are shopping for more quiet pickups. Kind of a nothing to see here approach, after all, they had very little roster room or real needs heading into the offseason. This is one of those, if he makes the team, the Indians did the right thing bringing him in....if he does make the team then he really wasn't expected to any way.
