Indians trade for Esmil Rogers, send down Matt LaPorta

The Cleveland Indians traded for Esmil Rogers from the Colorado Rockies yesterday for infamous cash consideration. To make room for Rogers on the 40-man roster, the Indians designated Luke Carlin for assignment. Matt LaPorta was then sent back down to Columbus to make room for the right-handed reliever.

Rogers has struggled, to say the least, in 2012. He started off solid with four straight shutout appearances, but since then has had six appearances of giving up multiple runs, including two giving up four, and one giving up five. In his last appearance with the Rockies, he gave up three runs against the Dodgers.

The righthander has been a bit of a bust in his four seasons with the Rockies, rarely carrying an ERA below 4.00 or 5.00, and giving up big innings. He was a struggling starter in the minors.

Carlin will likely clear without getting claimed, and get re-assigned back to Columbus. LaPorta heads back to Columbus after playing a whopping three games in Cleveland, going 2-for-11. It's good to see Acta gave him a chance. It seems as though the Indians have made another curious move at the front end of their pen, and at the expense of an actual prospect.
