Today the Indians have announced that they have traded Triple-A Columbus outfielder Ryan Spilborghs to the Texas Rangers for cash considerations. He has been assigned to their Triple-A Round Rock affiliate.

Spilborghs, 32, was hitting .250 with 1 HR, 13 RBI and a .675 OPS in 21 games with Columbus this season. In seven Major League seasons he is a career .272 hitter with 42 HR, 218 RBI, and .768 OPS in 619 games.

The Indians signed Spilborghs to a minor league contract in the offseason and invited him to Major League spring training to win a job on the opening day roster. He was considered up until the final days of spring training, but the Indians chose to have Aaron Cunningham open the season as their fourth outfielder in Cleveland.

With Spilborghs' departure, the Indians will be able to shuffle some of their outfielders in the system. They have already reassigned Double-A Akron outfielder Ben Copeland to Columbus, and he will assume fourth outfielder duties in Columbus now. The Indians have yet to announce who will slide into the outfield at Akron, but there is a chance that High-A Carolina outfielder Tyler Holt may finally get his well deserved promotion to Akron.

If they move Gallas instead of Holt...boy...short term or long term...would have to really fire Holt up. That kid has done everything they have asked and more. Would miss him down here though.

If Holt moves...would be really interested to see what they do in Carolina. Cid would clearly move to center, with Moncrief and Gallas...but not sure they view Cid as anything but a fourth OF. Can't imagine they'd move Luigi...

but would LOVE to see Myles or Luigi make the move.

Because Copeland is filling a bench role. Fedroff and Goedert need to play everyday, and with LaPorta/Canzler in LF, Carrera/Crowe in CF, and Huffman/Crowe in RF, there is no room for Goedert/Fedroff right now to play. One of the starters has to be traded, injured, or moved somewhere before those two go up.

why promote copeland and not fedroff or goedert?
