Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Cleveland Indians have inquired about A.J. Burnett.  The teams have reportedly discussed about trading Travis Hafner to the Yankees, who is under contract for $13 million this season with a $2.75 million buyout following this season, which makes perfect sense for filling the DH role in New York. However, the Yankees would have to be willing to take on a significant chunk of Burnett's remaining $33 million left on his contract in order for the Indians to bite. No deal is imminent and the Pittsburgh Pirates remain the odds on favorite to land Burnett's services.

For as much as I wanted Hafner to be gone from '08-'10, I'd take 50 games of him over the 150 innings from Burnett. Ugh. Plus, if we want to contend, I think we need something from the man formerly known as Pronk in 2012.

Agreed. Looks like the Indians were just inquiring and it never became serious. But the fact they inquired makes you think they are still looking to add more pitching. Interesting.

I'm glad to hear this trade won't happen. We should be looking to trade for a bat, not trading for another bad contract.

Our problem was scoring runs last year. If we do it, it will just confirm that the rest of MLB is just around to stock the Yankees at MLB's whim...

MLB.com is reporting the deal is off.

Seems to me that the idea behind trading Hafner should be to dump his salary, not to take on another one. Especially for a guy with a 5+ ERA.
