EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains (22-19, 53-57) jumped out to an early lead over the South Bend Silver Hawks (21-20, 56-55) and could not hold on as the bullpen gave up the winning run in the ninth inning. The Captains fell to the Silver Hawks 7-6.

Lake County batted around in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. First baseman Jerrud Sabourin and rightfielder Bryson Myles led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Catcher Jake Lowery launched his fourth homerun of the year, a three-run to left-center field. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo followed with a solo bomb deep to left-center field. Castillo has three round-trippers on the year. Left fielder Marcus Bradley walked and stole his first base of the year. Shortstop Francisco Lindor walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Jordan Smith drove in both runners with a two run single to right field. Smith plated his 51st and 52nd runs on the season.

Lowery on his three run bomb, “I was looking for a pitch that I could drive in at least one run. I got ahold of a pitch and the wind must have taken it out of the ballpark.”

J.R. Bradley, the Silver Hawks right-hander starter, left the game after two innings. Bradley allowed six runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out no one. Reliever Frank Santana relieved Bradley to start the third inning.

South Bend clawed back to within two runs in the top of the fourth. Shortstop Raul Navarro singled up the middle to lead off the inning. First baseman Tom Belza scored Navarro from first with a RBI double to the left-center field gap. Designated hitter Matt Helm reached on a base on balls. Third baseman Ryan Court hit a three run homerun to left field, his fifth of the season. Helm and Court both scored on the four-bagger.

Left-hander Danny Jimenez pitched a season-high six innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Reliever Francisco Valera took over in the seventh inning.

The Silver Hawks made it a one run game in the top of the eighth. Belza singled to center field. A wild pitch by Valera moved him to second. Helm drove home Belza, his second RBI of the game to make it a 6-5 game going to the bottom half of the frame.

South Bend took the late lead with a ninth inning rally. Centerfielder Marc Bourgeois singled to left field. Silver Hawks manager Mark Haley brought in pinch-hitter Roidany Aguila came to bat for catcher Zachary Jones. Aguila bombed a ball to deep center field to give South Bend a 7-6 lead.

The South Bend bullpen combined to throw seven innings of shutout baseball, only allowing three hits and one walk. Seth Simmons (4-3, 1.87) picked up his fourth win of the year.

Valera allowed one run on two hits in one and two thirds innings. Manuel Carmona (0-1, 3.26) blew the save and took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in one and one third innings.

Manager Dave Wallace commented on the late collapse, “We accomplished the goal of removing the starter from the game as soon as possible. We got a little too comfortable and they took advantage at those times. We need to continue to play the game at a full level at all times.”

The Captains had eight hits on the night. Sabourin and Myles led the way with two hits each.

The Captains and Silver Hawks will resume the four game series on Sunday night. RHP Roberto Hernandez (1-0, 1.80) will make his third minor league rehab start, his second with Lake County. South Bend will counter with RHP Tyler Green (3-6, 4.22). First pitch from Classic Park is set for 7:00 PM.

Wallace gave few details regarding Hernandez’s start. “We haven’t heard of a certain pitch count, I am sure we will at some point. All he is going to do is get his work in so he can feel ready to pitch in Cleveland.”
