Lake County Captains lose big lead, game to Lansing Lugnts
LANSING, Mich – The Lansing Lugnuts (7-11) came back from a 4-0 deficit as to defeat the Lake County Captains (5-14) 6-5 on a walk-off RBI single by centerfielder D.J. Davis.
Lake County has dropped five straight games.
Lake County jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Third baseman Paul Hendrix singled with one out and moved to second on an error. A wild pitch moved Hendrix ninety feet from scoring. Right fielder Josh McAdams grounded out to short, allowing Hendrix to cross the plate.
The visitors put a three spot on the board in the third inning to open the largest lead of the night. The Captains loaded the bases with the first three batters (a single, a double and a walk). First baseman Grant Fink plated a run with a groundout. Second baseman Claudio Bautista added a RBI single and another run scored on a throwing error.
The three-run third was the end of Lansing starter Adonys Cardona. Jairo Labourt entered in relief and retired the final batter of the inning after allowing a single. Cardona allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in 2.2 innings. He walked two and struck out five.
Captains’ right hander Adam Plutko cruised through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third inning.
The Lugnuts used three singles to load the bases with no outs. Davis struck for the second straight night with a bases-clearing hit, this time a triple. Designated hitter Mitch Nay scored Davis with a RBI single to tie the game at four.
Plutko struck out a career-high 10 batters in 4.2 innings before coming out of the game. He gave up four runs on six hits with two walks. Alexis Paredes came in and worked around a runner in scoring position to keep the game tied.
Dragmire followed with two scoreless innings.
Lansing took its first lead of the game with a run in the seventh inning. Right fielder Carlos Ramirez led off with a walk, moved to second on an interference error and went to third on a single. Davis took the lead with a RBI single. The Lugnuts took a 5-4 lead following the seventh.
Paredes allowed an unearned run in his 2.1 innings of relief. Trevor Frank entered for the eighth in a one-run deficit.
After being shutout for the last five innings, the Captains tied the game in the ninth off of Scott Sliverstein. Left fielderCody Ferrell laced a one-out double to left field. A wild pitch and a groundout by Hendrix scored Ferrell.
Davis finished his five-RBI game with the game-winning single to send the fans home happy in Lansing.
Trevor Frank took the loss, after giving up the winning run in the ninth. Scott Silverstein picked up the win for the Lugnuts.
On Thursday night, the Captains and the Lugnuts are scheduled to wrap up the four-game series. RHP Mitch Brown(0-2, 5.40 ERA) is set to start for the Captains and RHP Kendall Graveman (1-0, 0.44 ERA) is scheduled to toe the rubber for Lansing. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
