Lake County Captains lose early lead, game to Fort Wayne, 10-5
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps (15-21) came back from a 3-0 deficit and pulled away in the middle innings to take the series opener from the Lake County Captains (11-26), 10-5, on Monday night at Parkview Field.
The Captains have dropped two straight games.
The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. First basemanNellie Rodriguez led off with a double to center field and advanced to third on a groundout. Second baseman Claudio Bautista singled Rodriguez for the first run and moved to second on a throwing error. Right fielder Josh McAdams followed with a RBI single of his own.
Lake County added a run in the third to make the lead 3-0. ShortstopPaul Hendrix laced a one-out double to extend his hitting streak to four games and his on-base streak to 19 games. A throwing error on a groundball to third allowed Hendrix to score.
Fort Wayne rallied back to take a 5-3 lead in the bottom half of the third. Centerfielder Mallex Smith singled and stole second base before scoring on a RBI single by designated hitter Dustin Peterson. With Peterson on first, Captains’ pitcher Dace Kime tried to pickoff the runner but Rodriguez was unable to catch the throw. Peterson moved to second on the error. Right fielder Franmil Reyes singled to put runners on the corners with one out. First baseman Jake Bauers singled home Peterson, cutting the lead to one. Catcher Ryan Miller launched his second homerun of the year, a three-run shot to left field, to give the TinCaps the first lead of the night.
The Captains tied the game at five in the fifth. Hendrix doubled for the second time in the game to open the frame. Catcher Eric Haase tripled home Hendrix for his 13th RBI of the year. Rodriguez tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Haase.
The TinCaps did not keep the game tied for long. They took a 6-5 lead in the fifth.
Bauers doubled, moved to third on a single and crossed the plate on a groundout by left fielder Henry Charles.
Kime dropped to 0-6 on the year, with a final line of five innings pitched, 10 hits, six runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Southpaw Luis Lugo entered in relief in the sixth inning.
Fort Wayne added four insurance runs in the sixth inning off of Lugo. The runs were scored on a throwing error by Haase, a two-run double by Reyes and a RBI single by Bauers.
Payton Baskette started for the TinCaps and picked up his first win of the year. He allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings. He walked two and fanned five Captains batters.
Lugo gave up four runs on four hits in three innings of relief. He walked one and struck out five.
The TinCaps bullpen worked around four hits and two walks in three innings to keep the Captains off the board.
The Captains had 10 hits in the game as Hendrix had four hits, including three doubles. Over the last ten games, Hendrix is hitting .390 (16-41) with five doubles, four homeruns and nine RBI’s. Bautista added two hits in the game.
The Captains are scheduled to remain in Fort Wayne, Ind., Tuesday to continue a three-game series with the TinCaps. Lake County is set to start RHP Jordan Milbrath (1-2, 1.04) and Fort Wayne will counter with RHP Kyle Lloyd (1-1, 2.16). First Pitch is at 7:05 p.m. from Parkview Field.
