Lake County Captains pile it on in 10-3 win against Fort Wayne
EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake County Captains (16-30) completed their first series sweep of the season on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps (17-28), 10-3.
The Captains jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. First baseman Nellie Rodriguez led off with a single but was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of third baseman Grant Fink. Designated hitter Anthony Santander singled to move Fink to second base. Second baseman Claudio Bautista doubled home both runners to take the lead.
Fort Wayne cut the lead in half in the fifth inning. First baseman Jake Bauers hit a ground-rule double to left field to begin the rally. Catcher Ryan Miller moved Bauers to third base with a groundout and left fielder Henry Charlesfollowed with a RBI single. The run was the first run given up by Aviles in his last 14.1 innings.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Lake County made it a 5-1 lead with three more runs. Shortstop Paul Hendrix hit his sixth home run of the year – a three-run shot to the lawn in right field.
The TinCaps pulled within two runs following a two-run home run by right fielder Franmil Reyes in the sixth. Reyes’ fifth home run scored a runner from first base with no outs.
Weickel took the loss, after allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He walked two and fanned three.Tony Wieber entered in relief for the seventh.
The Captains blew the game open with three runs in the seventh inning against Weiber. Center fielder Clint Frazierdoubled and went to third on a single by Hendrix. Left fielder Dorssys Paulino singled home Frazier and advanced to second on the throw. Two batters later, Fink singled home Hendrix and Paulino. Fink now leads the Captains in RBIs with 23.
Aviles went seven innings for the second time this season to improve his record to 1-1. He gave up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Aviles now has a 1.65 ERA throughout nine appearances (four starts). Southpaw Wander Beras threw a scoreless eighth inning.
Lake County capped the scoring at 10-3 with two more runs in the eighth. Bautista opened the eighth with his third hit of the game, a single to left field. Right fielder Cody Ferrell singled to center field, with Bautista moving to third. Frazier plated Bautista with a sacrifice fly to center field. The center fielder made a throwing error, allowing Ferrell to score.
Trevor Frank pitched a scoreless ninth, despite a leadoff double.
Weiber surrendered five runs on seven hits in two innings for Fort Wayne.
Three different players had three-hit games for Lake County – Hendrix, Paulino and Bautista. In the series, Bautista had nine hits in eleven at-bats with three doubles, one homerun and six RBI’s.
The Captains are scheduled to travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to begin a series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Thursday. The Captains will start RHP Dace Kime (0-6, 7.82) and the Hot Rods will counter with RHP Jaime Schultz(0-0,0.00). First Pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM from Bowling Green Ballpark.
