Lowery, Captains fly by Hawks, 10-6
SOUTH BEND – Jake Lowery led the Lake County Captains over the South Bend Silver Hawks as he hit his sixth home run of the season to carry the Captains to a 10-6 victory on Sunday.
Elvis Araujo (6-9, 5.21) received the win for the Captains as he countered South Bend’s 6’8” lefty Andrew Barbosa (2-3, 3.89).
The Captains leapt on the board immediately in the first as second baseman Jose Ramirez led off with a walk and swiped second for his 12th stolen base of the season. With two out, first baseman Jerrud Sabourin doubled to center to score Ramirez. Left fielder Bryson Myles followed with a single into right to plate Sabourin, advancing the Captains to a 2-0 lead.
The Silver Hawks climbed to the lead in the second inning as first baseman Matt Helm sent his 31st double of the year deep to center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Araujo relinquished back-to-back walks to third baseman Ryan Court and left fielder Kerry Jenkins before designated hitter Roidany Aguila dumped a single into right to score two runners. The Silver Hawks tacked on a third run as catcher Bryan Henry also singled to score Jenkins, giving South Bend the 3-2 lead.
The Captains ran away with the remainder of the ballgame as they scored in four-straight innings. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo singled during the fourth and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of shortstop Yhoxian Medina and catcher Jake Lowery sent his sixth home run over the left field wall to add three more in the fifth inning.
Both starters were pulled after five innings. Araujo ended the evening allowing three runs on five hits and a pair of walks with one strikeout. Barbosa left the game with a final line of six runs allowed (two earned) on seven hits and a trio of walks.
Barbosa was replaced with Matt Sample to start the sixth, and the Captains took advantage of the right-hander’s free samples as designated hitter Alex Lavisky lined a single to right. With two out, centerfielder Luigi Rodriguez doubled to left to plate Lavisky. Lake County’s Smith-Sabourin duo struck again as right fielder Jordan Smith singled to score Rodriguez and Sabourin followed with a single of his own to plate Smith and give the Captains the 9-3 lead.
The Silver Hawks responded with one more run in their half of the sixth when Helm doubled again and scored on an RBI groundout by Court.
Lowery continued his offensive output in the seventh as he singled to left and scored after Lavisky singled and Medina grounded into a force out, putting the Captains’ score into double-digit range at 10-4.
South Bend took a stab at a comeback in the eighth off of Captains’ reliever Harold Guerrero, who was making his debut with the Captains. Guerrero yielded a lead-off walk to right fielder Tom Belza, who scored on a wild pitch after Court singled to right. Guerrero was pulled after walking Jenkins and replaced with Enosil Tejeda. Aguila greeted Tejeda with a single to center and Court scored on a groundout to cut the Captains’ lead to 10-6.
The four-run difference was all Tejeda needed for the ninth as he pitched the Captains out of a small jam to preserve the 10-4 win.
Lowery ended the evening hitting 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Lowery is presently hitting .306 with five home runs through his last 10 games. Smith hit 3-for-5 with a triple to boost his season average to .311.
Next, the Captains will remain in South Bend on Monday as they will turn to right-hander Cody Anderson (4-6, 3.18) to take on South Bend right-hander Archie Bradley (10-5, 3.86).
