Mahoning Valley Scrappers lose to Auburn in extra innings

Auburn, NY-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers were cruising along towards a 2 game sweep of the Auburn Doubledays on Monday night. However, 2 out walks, a passed ball and a throwing error derailed the Scrappers and led to a 4-3 walk-off loss in 10 innings.

The Scrappers grabbed an early lead when Steven Patterson led off the 4th inning with his 3rd double is as many games. A balk by Auburn starter Jefry Rodriguez, moved Patterson to third. Bradley Zimmer, the Cleveland Indians top draft pick, then singled home Patterson to make it a 1-0 Scrappers lead. It was the first hit for Zimmer in his professional debut.

The Doubledays answered right back in the bottom of the 5th inning.Raudy Read singled to lead off the inning. He then advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. A 2 out single fromDiomedes Eusebio brought home Read to tie the game at 1.

The Scrappers wasted no time grabbing the lead right back. In the top of the 6th inning, lead-off hitter Greg Allensingled to start the inning. A wild pitch and a ground out moved him to third. Zimmer was then hit by a pitch from Auburn reliever RC Orlan. With runners at the corners and 1 out, Francisco Mejia singled to give the Scrappers a 2-1 lead.

Mahoning Valley added to the lead in the top of the 7th inning. Drake Roberts reached on a fielder’s choice and then came around to score on an RBI single from Allen to push the lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the 8th inning the Doubledays were able to tie the game up with a 2 out rally. Luke Eubank came on in relief and got the first two batters out on strike outs before issuing a 2 out walk to Matt Page. Read then followed with his 2nd hit of the ballgame to put the tying runs on base. Cody Gunter followed with an RBI single to score Page and send Read to third with the tying run. A passed ball from Mejia, allowed Read to score from third to tie the game.

The Scrappers and Doubledays then went scoreless in the 9th to send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10 inning, Osvaldo Abreu reached base on a 2 base throwing error from Roberts to lead off the inning. Jimmy Stokes then struck out Jeff Gardner, but a wild pitch allowed Abreu to move to third. Matt Page then singled to centerfield to end the game at 4-3.

Stokes (0-1) took the loss for Mahoning Valley. The winning run was unearned. Jake Joyce (1-0) was the winner for Auburn.

The Scrappers now head back home to begin a 6 game home stand starting Tuesday night against Batavia. If you can’t be at Eastwood Field or on the road, catch all the Scrappers games this season with Tim Pozsgai on Sports Radio 1240 AM.
