NILES, Ohio – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers did not keep their streak rolling as they were defeated by the Auburn Doubledays, 2-0, but managed to salvage the day with a 3-0 win in the second game of a Thursday doubleheader.

In the opener, Auburn’s Drew Vettleson got things going early with an RBI in the top of the first.

In the second inning, Scrapper Martin Cervenka nearly picked up a home run, but the ball was reeled in by the Doubledays’ centerfielder.

The Scrappers brought Cameron Hill in to pitch in the sixth inning as he gave up hits to the first two batters he faced. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance before Hill eventually loaded the bases. Another wild pitch brought in the final run of the game for the Doubledays.

Mahoning Valley coach Ted Kubiak Hill played well, even through the rough inning.

"He threw well,” Kubiak said. “He got in trouble there with the first couple of hitters but he definitely did not let up.”

In the second game, both teams remained scoreless through two frames, but Mahoning Valley opened it up with a two-run third inning. The Scrappers’ insurance run in the fifth proved unnecessary as they won the seven-inning contest.

In the bottom of the third inning, Ordomar Valdez stepped up to the plate and hit a blooper right between second base and right field. He stole second base before another runner got on for Mahoning Valley. Scrappers’ left fielder smacked a triple to drive in both runners and take the 2-0 lead.

From there, Mahoning Valley cruised the victory as Justin Garcia picked up the win while Luis Gomez got the save.

The Scrappers are set to play the Batavia Muckdogs tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
