The Cleveland Indians today announced they have placed right-handed pitcher Justin Masterson on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation. They have added left-handed pitcher Nick Hagadone from Triple-A Columbus to take his spot on the roster.

Also the Indians have selected the contract of catcher Roberto Perez from Columbus. To make room for him on the 25-man roster they have optioned outfielder Tyler Holt to Columbus and to make room for him on the 40-man roster they have designated right-handed reliever Mark Lowe for assignment.

Perez, 25, is making his debut at the Major League level after spending the entire 2014 season with the Columbus Clippers, hitting .305 (53-174) with 11 doubles, 1 triple, 8 home runs and 43 RBI in 53 games (.405/.517/.922). He is 11th in the International League in RBI (6th most in the organization) despite missing over two weeks in mid-May with a strained left hamstring (has 16 RBI over last 13 G since June 21).  For the year he is hitting .308 (37-120, .962 OPS) off right-handed pitching, .412 (35-85) with runners on base and .440 (22-50) with RISP. The Mayaguez, PR native was the club’s 33rd round pick (#1011 overall) in the 2008 draft out of Lake City C.C.

Hagadone begins his fourth stint with Cleveland (5/3, 6/2-12, 6/25-28) where he has gone 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in 6 previous relief appearances (3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 4 K). Around those stints in Cleveland he has gone 3-4-1 with a 3.77 ERA in 23 games at Triple-A (28.2 IP, 26 H, 16 R/12ER, 12 BB, 41 K, 12.9 K/9, .250 AVG) and has limited left-handed hitters to a .205 (9-44, 24K, 2 2B) average against.

Masterson is beginning his first career stint on the Major League DL. He has gone 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts over the 2014 season for Cleveland (98.0IP, 106H, 66R/60ER, 56BB, 93K).

I'm pretty sure Masterson was on the DL last year too, before finishing the season in the pen.

Congrats to Perez. 33rd Rounder that has been solid defensively and has always had a great walk rate. The hitting has come along and he makes the Show!
