Masterson placed on DL, Hagadone and Perez called up
The Cleveland Indians today announced they have placed right-handed pitcher Justin Masterson on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation. They have added left-handed pitcher Nick Hagadone from Triple-A Columbus to take his spot on the roster.
Also the Indians have selected the contract of catcher Roberto Perez from Columbus. To make room for him on the 25-man roster they have optioned outfielder Tyler Holt to Columbus and to make room for him on the 40-man roster they have designated right-handed reliever Mark Lowe for assignment.
Perez, 25, is making his debut at the Major League level after spending the entire 2014 season with the Columbus Clippers, hitting .305 (53-174) with 11 doubles, 1 triple, 8 home runs and 43 RBI in 53 games (.405/.517/.922). He is 11th in the International League in RBI (6th most in the organization) despite missing over two weeks in mid-May with a strained left hamstring (has 16 RBI over last 13 G since June 21). For the year he is hitting .308 (37-120, .962 OPS) off right-handed pitching, .412 (35-85) with runners on base and .440 (22-50) with RISP. The Mayaguez, PR native was the club’s 33rd round pick (#1011 overall) in the 2008 draft out of Lake City C.C.
Hagadone begins his fourth stint with Cleveland (5/3, 6/2-12, 6/25-28) where he has gone 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in 6 previous relief appearances (3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 4 K). Around those stints in Cleveland he has gone 3-4-1 with a 3.77 ERA in 23 games at Triple-A (28.2 IP, 26 H, 16 R/12ER, 12 BB, 41 K, 12.9 K/9, .250 AVG) and has limited left-handed hitters to a .205 (9-44, 24K, 2 2B) average against.
Masterson is beginning his first career stint on the Major League DL. He has gone 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts over the 2014 season for Cleveland (98.0IP, 106H, 66R/60ER, 56BB, 93K).
