BOWLING GREEN, KY- The Lake County Captains (4-1, 27-45) only had two hits on Monday but they had the big hit of the game in the ninth inning. Lake County defeated Bowling Green (3-2, 42-32) 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel.

Hot Rods’ starter Jeff Ames shutout the Captains with six innings of two-hit ball on May 13th. This time around, Ames threw six innings with only one hit allowed but earned a no-decision. Ames walked a season-high five batters and struck out two.

Lefty Ryan Merritt outdueled Ames with eight shutout innings, only allowing five hits in the process. He snapped a three game losing streak, dating back to a game against the Hot Rods on May 30th, where he pitched six innings of one-run ball.

The Captains scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitch by Hot Rods reliever Nick Sawyer. First baseman Joe Sever stepped to the plate with one on and two out, hoping to be the hero. Sever lined a double to right field, scoring Paulino to give Lake County a 1-0 lead going to the bottom of the ninth.

Louis Head entered the game in the ninth to try to close the game. Head allowed a one-out single to second baseman Thomas Coyle. Coyle stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch before catcher Justin O’Conner walked with two outs. Head got a lineout to second base to lockdown his fifth save of the year.

Sawyer took the loss, allowing one run on one hit in three innings of relief. He struck out four batters.

Sever had Lake County’s only two hits on Monday night as well as a walk. Logan Vick walked three times in the game.

The Captains and Hot Rods will complete the three game series on Tuesday afternoon. RHP Dylan Baker (3-5, 4.08 ERA) will toe the rubber for Lake County and he will take on RHP Taylor Guerrieri (5-2, 2.50 ERA) for Bowling Green. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
