Mistakes doom Lake County Captains in 10-4 loss to Kernels
(Cedar Rapids, IA)- Jason Kanzler hit a two-run home run to dead center field and the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Lake County Captains 10-4 on Wednesday. Cedar Rapids scored a total of three runs in the bottom of the third. Lake County committed five errors in the ballgame. The loss snapped the Captains six game win streak.
In the bottom of the first inning, Cedar Rapids took the early lead. The Kernels sent seven hitters to the plate and scored four runs. In the inning, Lake County made three errors, three of the four runs were unearned. The big hit in the inning was a two-out double byMitch Garver.
Cedar Rapids added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk. The score was 8-0. Lake County got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Paul Hendrix hit a two out triple and Nellie Rodriguez singled home Hendrix. The score was 8-1. Rodriguez has hit safely in 15 straight games.
Cedar Rapids added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Logan Wade hit a leadoff triple and Chad Christensen doubled home Wade. The score was 9-1. Christensen came home a single from Alex Swim the score was 10-1.
The Captains scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning. With two runners on base, Brian Ruiz laced a double to left field and one run scored. It was 10-2. The runners were now on second and third base and Paul Hendrix tripled to clear the bases. The score was 10-4 at the stretch.
RHP Caleb Hamrick (3-5) started the game for the Captains and took the loss. Hamrick pitched four plus innings and allowed ten hits, eight runs, five earned runs, and four walks. Hamrick fanned one and allowed one home run.Justin Garcia pitched two innings in relief and allowed two earned runs on three hits. Garcia set down three on strikes. Carlos Melo pitched two shutout innings in relief. Melo walked one and struck out three.
RHP Chih-Wei Hu (1-0) started for Cedar Rapids to earn the win. Hu pitched six plus innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits, one walk and one hit batter. Hu fanned five. The Cedar Rapids Kernels used two relief pitchers in the game. The first man Alex Muren pitched two innings and allowed one hit and one walk and he fanned three. Jake Reed pitched the ninth for Cedar Rapids and did not allow a run.
The Captains will remain on the road for a six-game road trip to the state of Iowa. On Thursday, Lake County will take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Captains will send RHP Dace Kime (5-10, 4.76) to the mound and the Kernels will counter with RHP Kohl Stewart (2-5, 2.58).
