In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

With no major signings or trades occurring on Saturday, there are no "Top Stories." Instead, I will give a rundown of all of the day's news and notes.

Here are the stories from Saturday, January 4th.

News and Notes

  • According to's Tim Dierks, free agent closer Joel Hanrahan will work out for teams during Spring Training. Hanrahan is currently progressing quicker than expected, as he is already throwing off of a mound.
  • Bill Center of U-T San Diego reported that Padres GM Josh Byrnes has said that the team feels comfortable going into 2014 with third baseman Chase Headley on a one-year contract. Headley told Center that he is still open to a long term extension with San Diego.
  • Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun says the Orioles have had discussions with the Mets about trading for not only Ike Davis, but also Daniel Murphy and Lucas Duda.
  • Roch Kubatko of, however, says Baltimore's top priority is starting pitching.
  • Nyjer Morgan is taking offers from teams from both Japanese teams and MLB teams, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. Morgan spent last season in Japan.

Definitely interested in Hanrahan. As said, solid bullpen option if healthy.

Don't get the Padres. I know they want to resign Headley, but I just don't see that happening. Trading them now probably gets them more than at the deadline. I know he had a "down" year but still was very good. Could get a lot for him.

Hanrahan another bullpen option if healthy. Could be a person who could help a team during the second half of the 14 season.
