The offseason is in full spring now and news and rumors will start to become more and more frequent. In this new MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will often be tweeting news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter at @ajnicholsIBI.

Top Stories

  • Carlos Ruiz agreed to re-sign with the Phillies for 3 years/$26 million, with a club option for a fourth year. This is a bit of a steep price for the soon to be 35-year-old, and many assumed Ruiz would be hard pressed to find a deal with a guaranteed third year. This may be a case of the Phillies really valuing Ruiz's presence, or it could be a sign of higher than expected deals for this winter's free agent crop.

  • The Giants agreed to terms on a two year deal for right hander Tim Hudson. The deal will pay Hudson $23 million over the two year span. ESPN's Buster Olney reported that the deal is not yet finalized and it may include a full no-trade clause.  The Giants also checked in on Dan Haren, but a source said other teams were far more aggressive on him.  In my top 50 free agent predictions, I picked Cleveland as Haren's eventual landing spot.  The Indians also had interest in Hudson but it is not known if they were willing to go to two years for the 38-year-old, who is coming off of a gruesome ankle injury.

  • The devastating news of the day for Tribe fans is that former Indian great Omar Vizquel is set to become the new first base coach of the rival Detroit Tigers. Vizquel last played in 2012 with Toronto, and spent 2013 as the roving infield instructor with the Angels.

Other News and Notes

  • Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported that the Rangers have scratched top free agent outfielderJacoby Ellsbury off of their list, and instead are considering making a run at Shin-Soo Choo.

  • Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reported that the Yankees have serious interest in Jhonny Peralta as an option for shortstop, third base, and left field.

  • The Reds and utility man Skip Schumaker agreed to a two year deal.

  • The Orioles signed former Indians prospect Kelvin De La Cruz to a one year major league contract. De La Cruz has spent his entire career in the minors, but was still able to land a major league deal.

  • Roy Oswalt has said that he intends to pitch in 2014.

  • Joe Nathan told Jim Bowden on ESPN Radio that he likes the Tigers, Angels, and Yankees as fits for him.

  • Bronson Arroyo also told Jim Bowden on his ESPN Radio show that the Phillies, Dodgers, Angels, Giants, Twins, and Orioles have all expressed interest in him.

  • Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe suggests that Jose Bautista may be made available by Toronto this offseason.

I think Omar wants to be manager some day. In order to get there, he would need coaching experience where its available. There is only 30 major league teams. I don't know why everybody has problems with this. Sandy Alomar was a coach elsewhere before coming back to the Tribe. Charlie Nagy was pitching coach for the Diamondbacks. Jerry Dipoto is GM for the Angels. I don't understand the problem. Its not like he is playing for the Tigers.

Did I miss something in the past decade? Is it possible that Omar left with bad feeling with the current front office? Never an offer made to him to end his career as an Indian nor any offers to coach in any capacity for this team. Something just doesn't seem right in the relationship with the team.

Hawkins is a solid guy at $2.5M for one guaranteed year. Amazingly consistent.

LaTroy Hawkins signed with the Rockies for $2.5 M with a team option for 2015 at $2.25 M and a $250 K buyout. Reportedly beating out the Tribe among others.
