With the offseason now in full spring, news will continue to become more and more frequent. In this new MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Tuesday, November 19th.

Top Stories

  • Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported thatDavid Murphy has agreed to a deal with the Indians, pending a physical.  The deal is expected to be for two years at $10+ million.  Murphy is coming off of a career worst season in 2013, with a slash line of .220/.282/.374, with 13 HR and 45 RBI.  However, Murphy is a career .275 hitter and has hit double digit homers in each of the past six seasons.  In 2012, Murphy hit .304/.380/.479, with 15 HR and 61 RBI.  The outfielder also holds a lot of defensive value, and Ken Rosenthal reports that the Indians expect him to get 400-500 at bats in the outfield corners.  It is assumed that his primary role will be to serve as a platoon partner with Ryan Raburn.  The IBI will have additional analysis on the Murphy acquisition as more news on the deal becomes available.

  • Robinson Cano and agent Jay-Z called a meeting with the Mets to discuss a possible fit in Queens for the top free agent on the market. Mets GM Sandy Alderson has said already this winter that he does not anticipate going after any $100+ million dollar players, so a meeting with Cano seems strange. However reports have stated that New York informed Cano and company that a deal would be very unlikely, but that they would like to get to know new agent Jay-Z.

  • Reports have stated that the Giants, who signed Tim Hudson on Monday, may be close to a deal with top left handed reliever Javier Lopez. The side-arming lefty has pitched for San Francisco the past 3+ years. Many Indians fans pegged Lopez as a fit in the Tribe bullpen, but he looks to be headed back to San Francisco. The Giants also remain engaged with veteran starter Bronson Arroyo. Four of the five spots in the San Francisco rotation are set, with Matt CainMadison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum, and now Tim Hudson.

  • Sources say that Josh Johnson has signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Padres.  The deal will also include additional performance bonuses.  Johnson will look to re-establish himself in a pitcher's park.

Other News and Notes

  • Scott Lauber of the Boston Globe said he has heard outfielder Carlos Beltran and the Red Sox have engaged in “serious dialogue.”

  • Corey Hart told Jim Bowden that his agent has talked with a handful of clubs, and he names the Brewers, Red Sox, Rays, and Rockies.

  • Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that he has heard pitcher Josh Johnson has a list of finalists and they are all in the National League.

  • There are reports that pitcher Gavin Floyd is progressing from May elbow surgery so well that he will be starting a pitching program in December and could see game action prior to Opening Day.

  • Nick Cafardo tweeted that Grady Sizemore is receiving a lot interest and should be ready for Spring Training.

  • Yankees President Randy Levine has said that the team will not sit around and wait for Cano to make a decision, and they will make offers to other free agents that could affect the amount of money left for a Cano reunion.

Cabrera to the Cards does seem more plausible now that Andrus/Profar seem much less likely to be dealt (though rumors are andrus could still be moved in the right deal).

Freese would be a target but also wonder if Jon Jay couldn't be a target if you moved Bourn. Stubbs/Jay in CF wouldn't be bad. Moving both Cabrera and you lots of freedom to add pitching help.

I agree that they are probably done with the lineup. If they didn't go after Johnson have to believe a SP will come via trade. I look for the next move to be a back end RP possibly a closer.

With Murphy signed, it will be interesting to see what the Indians do with the lineup from here. It looks like they are done with the lineup.....but I have a feeling we are going to see a trade or two which may create a need for another bat or two still. Should be interesting to see how this shakes out. Only three weeks until the winter meetings!

Josh Johnson's deal reportedly has an interesting clause in it...
if he makes less than 7 starts for the Padres, they own a $4 M team option for 2015.
